Puffer WOW!

As you all know, I've been having issues getting DP's from PetCo. I had called the LFS and asked that they call me if they ever get any DP's in.

Well, today I went to do some looking around to see if there was anything I needed (cough cough), and my mom said I should ask them again about the puffers. The worker's reply was, "Well we have some of those right now!"

They showed me, and they did indeed appear to the dwarf puffers!! But on closer inspection, I noticed that one of the 2 didn't look like it had a dwarf puffer pattern. The only thing I could think of was that maybe it was a baby figure 8, but it didn't look exactly like one of those, either. I bought both of them anyways, since I thought that maybe they were weird marked DP's.

Well, I did some research when I got home and it appears that I got 2 rare RED EYED PUFFERS!!! I'm really excited!

But, can anyone tell me some more about red eyed puffer care? I've done some googling and it appears that it's basically the same as DP care. Is that right?

I was going to get 3 DP's, but now I'm just sticking with the 2 red eyes, because they seem to get a tad bigger than the regular DP's.

I forgot to say that I was fortunate enough to get a pair - a male and a female, and they were the only 2 left! What are the odds?

Hmmm... my female resembles a couple of those pics but my male doesn't resemble any of them closely. I'll try to post pics.

Also, can puffers change colors when they are stressed? Because I'm 90% sure that the male had one big round spot on his back at the LFS, but when I took those pictures he was pretty solid grey.

I don't know if this will help in determining the species, but the female's belly is white with alot of dark flecks.

Gaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! They are soooooooooo cute!!! I've wanted a redeye for a long time by never see any around here
Yes, puffers can definitely change colors. My DPs will sometimes fade their spots completely.

I've consulted Dr. Ebert (via his book ) and I think I may have it. Does the male have a red tail? Judging by the pics I'd say no, in which case I believe you have a Carinotetraodon lorteti

Wow, his color came back FAST!

No red tail... thanks for the help, but I'm still having trouble identifying them. I found a website with a description (no pictures though) of Carinotetraodon lorteti, and in the description the male sounds exactly like my male! But... I googled some pictures, and the results for a male look nothing like mine. Pictures of the stripes red eyed puffers look a LOT like my male, but no the female. However, the description of the striped red eyed puffer on the site with no pictures as well as pictures I've seen of the female striped red eye do not match my fish.

Also, my male looks almost exactly like the fish in this picture:

Only his tail isn't red. And he may be a tad bit lighter.

Hey Pink, I forgot to ask, but does my tank look adequately planted/decorated for puffers? I think the plants will be a little denser after they've had a chance to grow...

I did a quick google search, and most of the pictures that showed up were not actually C. lorteti. C. lorteti and the puffer pic you posted, which is C. irrubesco, are nearly identical except for the red tailfin
I think it should be ok. You'll be able to tell if it isn't... there will be lots of glass pacing and nipping at each other.
