Where to buy puffers?

Can anyone reccommend a good online site that sells live fish and doesn't kill you with shipping fees? I'm having.. well... issues with getting my DP's from PetCo. (Sorry Pink, I don't have puffers to show you!)

Oh no! Well, shipping will be steep anywhere, but I've heard good things about liveaquaria.com and That Fish Place.

Uggh - no way I can pay $30 or more in shipping only! (Well, actually I'm getting them for my b-day so my family is paying, but still, not paying that much in shipping for $2-$5 puffers!)

P.S. If I can find somewhere with cheap shipping, is there any way to specify males or females when you order online?

SHipping is generally the same no matter where you buy from.
DO you have a LFS that you can order through? That way you don't pay shipping.

I called the LFS, but from the way they acted they won't special order for you. They told me they would call back IF they ever got some in.

That was a few weeks ago. They're not on the usual stocking list, which is weird since they carry near-unheard of fish like farlowellas!

Yeah, shipping is always the same. You can check out ebay or aquabid though and see if anyone is offering reduced shipping. I don't think that most places know how to sex them, let alone sell them as such.

i was quite surprised about a week ago when i was in Walmart looking at their betta's when i noticed they had DP's. have you checked your local Walmart by chance?

i feel ya on the shipping, that has been holding me back from ordering fish online as well. i understand the need for the expense, but i dont think im into the hobby far enough for it to be worthwhile.

I ordered mine from Petland. I don't like to advertise that. I hate that I had to buy ANYTHING from a store that supports puppy mills. But...they did order a puffer for me.

Ah, didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

If you cannot get healthy fish locally, then online might be a good option. IMO, $30 is small compared to all the time, money, and worry you would potentially spend medicating a sick fish from LFS..

You can find some sellers on aquabid to ship you fish by priority mail for $15 or so. Having tried it, I would still recommend just paying for the express shipping. Two or three days in a box is hard on fish.

I called liveaquaria once and asked if they could select the sex you wanted, and they said no.

Amanda, it's a sad fact. I'd send a link, but I'm not allowed: No Links to Animal Cruelty Sites!

Ugh, yeah. Not a fan of that rule.

It's alright, I'm a part of many animal rights groups, I'll research it some.
Thanks for the heads up.
