It was some what difficut to pull out old info from back of my head.
I just want to remind you that
pH jumps exponentially.
The difference b.n each whole increment is ten fold thus difference b/n 6 an7 is
10 fold, b/n 6 and 8 is
100 fold, b/n 6 and 9
1000 fold in [H+]. I hope I am right. Correct me if I am wrong!
I am not recommending you to change any on your tank
But in the future, try to provide condition close to their natural habitat to avoid certain unanswered/unexplainable problems/death. W/O going in detail (I dont even know and/or fully understand the wOsmoregulation of fish and I dont want to know the whole thing but basics) on Osmoregulation, I just want to say
pH/Hardness plays very impotant role regulating necessary
functions of fish.
As in any water, there is no spcific/stable pH found in nature since pH can/will change upon other factors (Rainy/Dry Season). Even well water's chemistry changes upon amt of Rain fall.
So called brackish water, I doubt their water chemistry such as
salinity,pH is stable year around. I am sure it will change as fish will adapt to such TEMPORARY CHANGES, NOT long term exposure. Of course some fish will do bettre than others but why take the risk?
Anyway, my first suspicion was parasitic infection such as
ICH/Oodinium from the description you posted (curled up body/tattered fin/inactive w/ light)), but treating for such infection for puffer w/ commonly found remedy pretty much ineffective other than other remedies that I can test and monitor the med level. Kits you probaly dont have. Perhaps better med are avail now.
Thus recommended first method hoping that it was not infection but water issue. First approach was to see if antibiotic will knock out one problem (tattered fin/cloudy eye) then when and if F somehow gave us more time, my plan was to do s/w dipping and or proper med.
What can I say to comfort you but to say YOU TRIED YOUR BEST!
