Somebody tell me I made the right choice!

We were going to Wal-Mart today, so I thought I'd look around and try to find a tankmate for my 3 mollies. I was browsing the fish, when suddenly I saw something out of the corner of my eye, and this is the conversation I had with myself:

Quote:
"Wha... how... are those what I think they are? *GASP* GREEN SPOTTED PUFFERS!!!! AT WAL-MART!!! I've been wanting one of these for sooo long, and they're so cute! And they're only $5.88! I HAVE to get one! They're only a couple of inches long, so it will be fine in my 10 gallon until I get my 29 gallon stand in a couple of weeks! AND Mollies thrive in brackish water, too! All I'd have to do is switch from aquarium salt to marine salt! I neeeed ooone! I have to get one!!!"

"But wait... self, you KNOW that GSP's don't do well with other fish."

"Well, I can just take the Mollies back if it's agressive!"

"Now, where is the marine salt? Do you mean to tell me that there is no marine salt here?"

"Self, could you REALLY take those cute mollies back to the pet store?"

"Yes, I could! I think... hmmm."

"Self, CALM DOWN AND THINK CLEARLY!!!! You KNOW that it wouldn't be a good idea to have the ouffer with the Mollies. You KNOW all of this, you just aren't thinking clearly!"

"But I waaaant one sooo bad! I wanted one even before I got my mollies!"

"What would you feed it?"

"Oh, you know, snails, live foods, stuff like that."

"And WHERE would you get that stuff?"

"Umm... hmmm... well, I KNOW I could find it SOMEWHERE!!!"

"And see, the sign for the snails says they do not tolerate any salt!"

"Self, PLEASE think this through clearly. You know that you couldn't keep it with the mollies. You can't find any aquarium salt, and you're not sure where you're going to get the food. This is not a good idea!!!"
At this point, I talked myself out of it, and came home with a Dwarf Gourami.

But I'm still sad about not being able to have a puffer! I wanted one even before I got my mollies, but the pet store didn't have them. And what are the odds of WAL-MART, of all places, having them?

Someone, please tell me I did the right thing before I go and get one!

You definetly did the right thing. I know the feeling though You would have needed to slowly acclimate your mollies to the marine salt over a period of a couple of weeks anyways if that makes you feel any better. Hopefully they will get some more in soon when you get your 29 gallon set up. Many places will do a special order for you too. It will be worth the wait!

Looking around for PFP. lol
I think you did the right thing...for the moment.
Whenever we bring home a fish, it's best to be fully prepared to take care of it.

You can get the salt so you're prepared for the next time you see them.
Too bad you don't have the stand for your 29g now.

Even with the 29g, I still couldn't keep the puffer with the mollies, right? That's what I was thinking... I'll never have a puffer

At least, not for awhile.

Yeah, I don't think that the mollies would be able to hold their own with a GSP as he got bigger But I'd definitely ask PFP on that one, I know she keeps her puffers in species only tanks (divider for her dwarf puffer to keep her from the bettas).

Ugh, my Wal-mart had bumblebee gobies. And a betta that was covered in ulcers. And 3 bettas in vase together.

You made the right choice. Puffers are definitely not an 'impulse buy' kinda fish.
I have my boys with some mollies. The mollies fought like mad, and one day one of them started swimming funny from all the bullying. A few days later, I found poor Jimi missing most of his face and all his fins, being eaten by Pistachio..... so, it's not something I recommend.

And gosh guys, I can't always be on here! I need to go to the pet store sometime! (PS I brought home some 'buddies' )

Maybe....
Hehe, I got about 20 ghost shrimps... I had like 6 before, but I think the biggest one ate all the other ones cause there's only one left now. I call that one "Big Mama". I think the puffs would like Big Mama, eh?

I also got another little buddy that may or may not be the puffs friends, we'll have to see. But that's for another thread....

Hey, now that's a new idea! Bathe with my puffers!
I do have a dream of a swimming pool converted into a fish tank though.....

You can get a puffer, you just need to get a tank for him

They love hunting ghost shrimps! Hehe, it's so fun to watch. I keep the shrimps with my guppies and then fish a couple out when it's feeding time

The thing is, I don't have room for another tank.

Once I had a dream that I went to a swimming pool that was specially designed to look like a beach... the sides were sloping with sand on them, and there were lots of pretty fishies!
