My new F8, Captain Clack!

He's still a bit afraid of me (camera shy too), but he's loving his tubes at least.

I think Pink should keep a tally under her avatar of those she's recruited.

I think puffers are some of the coolest fish. What do you do to keep his teeth from growing to big?

I've amassed a ton of pond snails in one of my other tanks in preperation for the puffer.

Is it really true that their teeth grow so fast?

Feeding time!

There comes a time when all parents must decide that their children need to be kicked out...

I love your puffer and am soooo jealous. What you do to keep the teeth from growing so long is feed them snails that are about the size of their eyes, the crunchy shell wears them down, sort of like beavers when the cut down trees. And I don't know how fast the teeth grow, just that if you only feed them bloodworms you'll eventually have to use an anesthetic to manually clip their teeth, and that can kill the fish.

Guess I'll use this thread to document my guy. So to other puffer owners out there, how long did it take your fish to take to you? Because right now, the Captain is terrified of me, anytime I approach the tank he darts to the other side. Or, when I'm watching him, he'll simple just stare at the wall facing opposite me so he won't look at me.
I've tried enticing him with food, but he won't touch any of it untill I move away.

My puffers were curious from the start...
But, I know that Isis's puffer acts like yours... it's taken a liking to her kittens rather than her, lol.

I think this may also have to do with the fact that, judging by the size, Captain is an adult. So I'm sure he's lived a hard stressful life...plus that burn incident which he doesn't seem to have forgiven me for, no matter how many snails I throw in the tank for him.

Yeah, that could be a big factor... adult wild-caught fish don't take to aquarium life as well as younger ones. Mine were less than 1/3 of their fullgrown size when I got them

He is so cute! I am becomming weaker every time I see one. The only thing that keeps me from getting one is that I don't have a brackish tank.
Great idea to document your progress with him, and keep the pics coming!
Pink, you should keep a tally.

Yeah when I bought him he was in a tiny 2 gallon with 3 others who didnt look so well. You can see in the side view pic I have of him, he seems to have ICH. So even though I've been researching for this puffer for a while, this guy was a pity buy. He's been dewormed and I've treated him for ich and fungus which seems to have all cleared. Maybe he just needs time...

Sad I hate seeing tons of them packed into tiny spaces.

Yeah, I noticed that. Well, he's been through alot of stress. Time to calm down and get all settled will probably help. Also, I think he'll feel more secure with lots of hiding places, it looks like you did that.

Actually I was unhappy with the way his tank look so I complately redid it. Removed the substrate and everything-he does seem to prefer the new sand to the crushed coral/gravel mix I had. The tank is super overfiltered and I kept my eye on the water, and there was no minicycle. We both seem to be enjoying the change of scenery.

Sounds great. They do like to rest on the sand
Have you seen your guy sleeping? I think it's the cutest thing...

I'll be honest...I woke up extra early this morning with the sole purpose of trying to catch him sleeping and take his picture. But even with the sun barely nudging over the horizon he was buzzing about.

Once there's a bit of sunlight mine are up. If you turn the lights out then look about an hour later you'll probably see him sleeping. When I had to get up at like 5-6AM for a class I'd see them sleeping every day.
