Re: Dwarf puffer fish

Nope, figure 8 puffers are saltwater. Dwarf puffers are fully freshwater and stay very very tiny, unlike figure 8's (who get about 2 1/2 inches vs. DP's at 1.5).

Do DPs also eat MTS (malaysian trumpet snails)? I've read in other sites that if you got MTS, you basically remove them by hand.

Can anybody tell me if the DPs will eat MTS as well?

Ours don't really eat the MTS, but that's because the MTS are really good at burrowing, so you hardly ever see these snails. You basically only uncover them when you discover the gravel sometimes.

Ours eat bloodworms, and a couple of types of snail (don't know their name, sorry, would need to ask my husband. Am pretty sure I've heard him talk of ramshorns?)

Permission to be completely pedantic? I think figure 8's are brackish. But yes, not freshwater, you're right.

Ours are fully grown and they're about 1cm long.

That's true, Boxermom, but I've also read that they can be kept with some fish successfully. With us, they live with otos, a pleco, some shrimps and kuhli loaches, and there's not been a problem at all. But indeed, they can be pretty aggressive and there are a lot of warnings about them.

I'd not keep only two of them, or they'll fight. I'd have at least 3, with at least 1 male to 2 females.

They are carnivores and extremely aggressive for their size and should be in a species-only tank, definitely not in a community tank. If you have further questions, feel free to ask here or PM me.
What other fish have you got, and what size tank? Depending on the specifics, it can work.

We have a snail farm. It's just a small lit-up goldfish bowl with some substrate, a plant, a piece of limestone rock for their shells, and some fresh lettuce every day. We pick them up from our other tanks.

The male will have a yellow line on his belly.

Hi Cracker, the only dumb question is the unaswered one!

They do puff up, but only when they're feeling really really really excited. Mostly from a threat. So it's good that you dont' see them do it, basically.

Most people think that dwarf puffers don't puff, but that seems to be incorrect.

hmmm, good info. I always thought they did. I mean why would they call em "puffers" if they didnt. I was just beginning to second guess myself. lol. Ive personally never seen one puff. Yet.

Thanks!

I haven't seen ours puff either, but some people report seeing them puff, including on reputable websites.

You might want to check youtube if you're curious. We've found videos of other puffers puffing on there if you're interested.

As for puffer = puffing. If only that was true. I'd say that 90% of animal names that suggest something are wrong. It's really funny like that.
