looking into getting a puffer

I saw a spotted in the store the other day and have been researching them ever since - there is a lot of conflicting info out there!

I'm thinking of getting a Figure 8 - I gather they are smaller and gentler and require low-end brackish water which would allow me to keep tiger barbs or mollies with them? Does that sound right?

How big a tank do I need to start? I have a spare 10g - will that do for a juvenile/baby? I know eventually I'd need to upgrade...

Thanks!

Jonathan

Figure 8's will grow to approx 8cm and if keeping one would require a 20g tank or larger ideally. You would be best to use the 10g as a quarantine tank and buy a 20g or ideally a 30g of larger if possible.

It will be worth it as these little guys are good to watch very entertaining and active, a larger tank is always easier to maintain and better in the long run for growing fish.

Tiger barbs are fine for tank mates as long as you have 6 to 8 tiger barbs, I have seen people who do keep Molly's with F8's and report as doing well together.

F8's as long as well fed should not unduly bother tank mates.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info!

So tiger barbs and Mollies will do okay in a slightly brackish tank?

I wouldn't keep an adult puffer in a 10g, I just thought it might do for for a little while while he/she is small - I'm running out of room in my apartment and don't know where I would put another 20-30g tank right now...
