did i just do something wrong???

i just bought a green spoted puffer today at the pet store i work at i asked my boss if it would be a good idea to get him considering that i have many fish in my tank he said they would be fine but i was reading about them on the net and i read there tempermental and are fin-nippers im afraid for my fish! he still is small i dont think he will try anything with 3 sharks in the tank but then again...IDK what do you guys think will he hurt my fish or no. feel free to ask 4 more info if you need it.

P.S. they seem to get along fine till now but what do you guys think

The puffer may become more aggressive with age, but I would consider returning him ASAP

If this is the type of puffer you really have you might want to return him http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/prof...ckish/gsp.html . This particular one is brackish so you need to get special salt to keep it healthy and happy. I have been wanting a puffer and have been researching them I am leaning towards the dwarf puffer, I still need to do more research.

The other fish may not like the salt your putting in for the puffer. Especially the sharks.

But the salt acts like a calming drug right? But then again, it isnt filtered out or evaporated, so I guess she's right

No salt isn't a calming drug, sorry. It is a skin irritant to those fish who aren't brackish or salt water fish.
It also affects Osmoregulation- http://groups.msn.com/breedingtropic...egulation.msnw

I'm not sure what you mean by electrolyte salt but if it's not native to that fish it isn't good for them and will affect their system in some way.

like the stuff that'll aid in fish disease cure and adds electrolytes to the water and hatches the brine shrimp and all that stuff? I use it from the brand API

In the case of an illness that can't be treated any other way you don't have much choice but it still stresses the fishes system if they don't have that as their natural habitat.
I use uniodized salt to hatch brine shrimp and then rinse then before feeding them to my fish

my boss says the salt will remove some stress from the water and the rest of the fish will enjoy it. so it dont affect the rest of the fish so its all good. i use API brand stuff too. P.S. The puffer is doing great :]

we all learn the hard way. I remember my first time with a red tail shark.... in a ten gallon community.....

..then again, I was six, and my parents didn't know better either

Sorry that was learned the hard way. Hopefully your shark will be okay. At least it was a fin and not a fleshy part of the body. Those beaks can shear through flesh and bone like nothing.
The aquarium hobby magazine I get periodically had an article about keeping puffers with other fish, and across the board, they said "it can work, but be prepared to split them up."

As far as the salt goes, I want to clear a few things up. Aquarium salt and the salt that puffers need are two different animals entirely. Aquarium salt is made for treating fish that are ill with parasites or fungus or that are suffering from osmotic stress due to soft water (and there are now better ways of dealing with all three issues). The salt that puffers need is a milder solution of marine salt, as they live in estuaries between river and sea. Butterfly is right that any salt is going to stress fish out, especially if you already have hard water or if they're softwater fish (and many cats, such as cories, are softwater fish). Aquarium salt, in the long run, would not have the trace minerals that puffers need to feel happy and healthy.
