Evil Spotted Puffer.....

Ok, as most of you may know I have recently put a spotted puffer in my 14 gallon tank to get rid of those snails, well it did get rid of the snails, but now it wants more then snails. At first my black molly went missing for several days, and when looking behind a live plant I saw her remains. I was shocked and really grossed out. I won't get into details, but her head and tail were gone. Now today I was looking for the spotted puffer, Escargo, and saw my last albino corry, laying on the gravel dying. It's fins were severly ripped, tail was gone. So was the spotted puffer... I am really upset because there is only one fish who would do that, Escargo. Whenever I put in any new fish, while floating it, Escargo will attack the bag. I knew that he/she would dart after the albino and the speckled one, but thought nothing of it. Now I want to get rid of Escargo because I really liked my corries... I think I will have to take him/her to the empty 10 gallon. Learned my mistakes.... Never put anything in a tank with a spotted puffer. To bad I had to learn it the hard way though. 2 fish dead.

Awwwww! Sorry about your fishies! That is really sad. Is your spotted Puffer a dwarf puffer. If he is, you can put him in a 2-3 gallon tank by himself. I have one in a 2.5 gallon with an oto and he is doing great.

At the time you introduced the puffer, I think people here tried to warn you of the danger. I am really sorry your molly died.

Your puffer is not a good choice for a community tank.

Yes, I'm going to move him into the 10 gallon tank, but first we have to do a 90% water change from all the medicen(sp). He is already targeting the new molly. It is a spotted puffer, not a dwarf. Spotted Puffers are brackish, I think.

Spotted puffers should be started in a 10 gal and eventually moved up to at least a 30 gal coming from all the info I have read about them. They are very territorial and aggressive so they need a heavily planted tank to keep other fish out of its line of sight.

Sorry you lost your molly and cory.

Oh, really? The guy said they would be fine in a 10 gallon tank. But then again, they probley would have said Oscars are good community tank members too. But if it does need a bigger tank, I don't have any and I'm not getting any, any time soon either. No fish stores around this area that I know of will buy back, or let you give them fish.

This is where I got most of that information:

GSP

I could be wrong about it being a Green Spotted Puffer (GSP) but I'll let you make that call with the pictures on that website.

Sort-of. Mine is wayy unhealthy looking. It has severe damage to it's tail. It can't use it I think, and it looks either duller or brighter and has fewer spots, I think. But can't I do more then normal water changes if I keep it in the 10 gallon? Like 90% weekly?

90% will never let the tank get to a balanced point and will be like doing a 100% change every week like people do with goldfish bowls. Basically you will be going through the nitrogen cycle partially every week since you are adding so much tap water that usually has some ammonia, nitrates, and/or nitrites.

If you really want to try and keep him in a ten gallon you will want to add more filtering to the tank to basically filter for a larger tank. This might only be part of the problem in that they might need the space to just explore to keep them happy instead of sulking and staying in one area of the tank not swimming much. I have not had one personally so I can only tell you what i have read about them.

Oh ok. Well I guess that leaves me with the two choices, find someone to take him/her, or buy a bigger tank.

If you watch Craig's list you should be able to snag a cheap tank with most of the equipment that you need for less then $50.

Ok, thanks, I'll keep my eye open for any large tank setups. I don't want to get rid of Escargo!

My problems solved. The puffer died like 3 days ago from ick.
