New Tank - Thinking Decor For A DP

Just bought an inexpensive 4g seamless acrylic tank for the dp that will be mine. I cannot believe how striking this tank it. I'm going to go with real plants this time (easy stuff, java fern, etc). Although it's just 4g, it's very slender and pretty. My 10g is very long but short, so this has some different potential.

This is just a random pic from google images, but I can tell you I picked it up for around $50 (with filter and lighting), and have seen it retail for around $80 online.

Wasn't it you who had said earlier today that you were giving up on having a dwarf puffer for the time being? Or am I just confused?

If you're going to have Java fern, you're going to want something to plant it on. They prefer pieces of driftwood. You could get a piece of malaysian driftwood and saw off a little bit off it and lay the sawed-off end of it down on the bottom of the tank to make it still seem natural. Otherwise, you can also buy little fake rocks that have porous areas to allow plants like java ferns to root.
I'd suggest anacharis. I love the stuff. It grows really quick. It's a nice dark green color. You can start with a single strand of it, cut it off when it gets to be the height of the tank and plant the loose bit, now you've got two.

Re: New Tank - Thinking Decor For A DP

Hi Amorinthe.

May I be the bearer of bad news? Well not news, but just my personal, unrequested , opinion.

Seeing as how our 3 DP's (in the 13G) are 'schooling' all the time, I'd now hesitate to have a 1 DP set up. I was thinking about it back then, but now that I see them in action, it wouldn't feel right to have one on his own.

They're really buddying up and doing their 'spies on a mission' impression. I just can't picture one on its own now. Perhaps am totally off, and they're perfectly fine alone, as say the books, but, you know.

I do think they like quite a bit of room too, from the way ours are behaving.

We'll leave things as they are (overstocked, so things are slightly better from that perspective. 1 less puffer = A LOT less poop) but we'll have to keep a very close eye on the two females for signs of aggression.

Yep, am going to need Jim's truck poop services if it goes on like this. There you go for a previously undocumented 'America's dirtiest job': clean out a puffer tank.

if you have a McDonalds nearby, you could sell them the poo for using in their special sauce.
