pufferrrr.......reeefff.....pufffeeerrr.....reeeef ........

Ugh, Ive been planning to start a reef tank for so long, but I went to my LFS today, and got mentally devoured into the f8s and green spotted puffers on display. and now my mind is in an epic battle over starting a new SW reef, or a brackish puffer tank! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Its gonna take me awhile to figure this one out.

I vote for reef, but I'm a little obsessed with reefs....

How about the best of both? Get GSPs and move them up to SW, and have hard corals (they'll eat the soft ones )

my budget wont allow both.
but Moving gsps to sw sounds pretty considerable.

I highly suggest that option. GSPs are my favorite puffers, they are so much fun and so smart and friendly. There are some corals that are harder that they won't mess with, as well as some that taste icky. Lol. You can probably find a list of those somewhere... I'll be on the lookout for some as well.

One thing to think about- hard corals (SPS) require more intense lighting than LPS or softies. This adds greatly to the cost of setup.

Maybe just icky tasting ones then. Lol.

ya, I know sps, in many cases require at least sufficient metal halides, and actinic lighting.
Which means if I get a new aquarium, I may have to upgrade the lighting.
lol, I can just see the building up

My husband and I keep some sps in our new (upgraded) 50 gallon reef under HO T5's. They are cheaper to buy, and cheaper to run, than MH. I don't think you'd need MH.

Also, I don't know much about puffers really, but any inverts you might want to put in your tank (like your clean up crew) might be eaten. I know triggers will rearrange the tank to their liking, not sure about puffers.

Oh, yes. I know puffers love to reek havoc on crustaceans and mollusks!
well, yes your right with t5s. I just know sps requires high lighting and spectrum.

I can tell you that my GSPs have not been able to get the nerite snails that I keep with them, so there are some inverts that you can get away with. I've heard of someone sprinkling the bottom with shells so that the puffers couldn't see the hermit crabs, lol.

They're maybe an inch long at most.

I would assume their too big then, or have to hard of shells, but I havent kept any nerites. I had some trapdoors infesting my old aquarium, but my f8 Buppy made quick work of them! (R.I.P Buppy)

They have super hard shells, and stay close to the glass (don't poke out their antennaes or anything)
