Hunting for an efficient protein skimmer is excruciating. I have read reviews after reviews and during break time...even more reviews. This Fission Nano received bad reviews however, it is fairly inexpensive. Is anyone currently using the Fission Nano for their tank? If so how is it performing? I have a 20g saltwater fish w/live rock tank setup and bought the Fission Nano today. Let me know if I should return it before I open "pandora's box".

From what I've read it's not the best you can get. Here on fishlore.com it has a bad review though the aquac remora skimmer is supposedly excellent. For a 20g I think that would be too small even if it was good since it's only good up to 12g I think it is. I've read ok things about the berlin air lift if you are looking at costs, about the same price.

Don't waste your money on that skimmer. You'll just wind up buying another one to replace it once you realize it is hard to operate and doesn't pull anything out of the water. Fission Nano Protein Skimmer Review

Aquac is making a nano skimmer now. Do a google search on "aquac nano skimmer" and it should pull back something. It's about $100 bucks more than the Fission, but it will be worth it.

Yeah, I've seen the Aqua C Remora Nano but it's running about $130. I figured well if I'm going to spend that much I should just go ahead and purchase the regular Remora at $160. I saw the Berlin Lift...do you know of anyone who is using it? Is it successful?

I've read that the berlin lift gets the job done, but is in tank and obviously isn't high quality. I talked to a lfs that sells it and the guy that sold them said he's sold several and hasn't gotten anybody with complaints about it. Not saying it's good, just haven't read anything bad about it

Absolutely agree. I bought a SeaClone skimmer first, now I have an AquaC Remora. I wasted my money by going with anything other than the Remora. Only downfall I see is that AquaC's air induction system is a bit noisy.

Are you talking about the berlin Air Lift?

If so it comes in 60G and 90G models and works pretty awesome comparred to that horrible fission micro bubble maker,
I tried it on a 55 but get better results with my SuperSkimmer. Works well on my 29 and 10G

I am setting up a 10G tank with live rock and maybe live sand NOTHING ELSE. Mainly I'm setting it up so I can get used to checking and maintaining water parameters. Which skimmer would you guys recommend for that? It won't be stocked other than the bacteria so I wont need much skimming. I hope not to spend much either since I will be buying all new things once I have a main tank to set up.

Hmm 10 Gals is not much. I don't know. Skimmers are kind of a "You get what you pay for" kind of item really. AquaC is a fine company IMHO. They make a HOB Nano skimmer. I think it's called the Urchin. Personally I'd say if you are going to spend money on it then go all the way and buy what you plan on using in your final display. They aren't cheap so why buy a little junker one and waste the money you should be saving for the display. Keeping up on 10 Gals of water isn't gonna get you anything but bored. Snoozing bored. Trust me I used to try to run my fill water in a 20 gal with Live rock only and it drove me crazy wanting to put stuff in it. When I was doing that I didn't use a skimmer and the water was always clean as could be. You have to put in something to feed the bacteria. I put a little waste water from my display in the 20 every once in awhile. Anyway, like I said, I tried something similar and it was a waste of time and money. Skip the 10 and think about a 30 Nano or something. Heck, a 55G setup at Wally will get you pretty far. You could use the included filter and light untill you started adding livestock. That way you get your live rock cured and established right in the display, get some real practice with water quality and not watse time and money on a 10G setup. The lower light may help the coraline get going. It seems it likes the shaded areas better. You wouldn't have livestock to worry about when you start to have your algae battles. OK enough said, I recommend Aqua C skimmers.

I get it, but, I'm just anxious and I still don't have the money needed for a main tank. Plus, I really want the 180G.

No skimmer needed on a 10 gallon. Heck no skimmer is needed on a 55 gallon either. Just do water changes. Around 10-20lbs of live rock and a 30lbs bag of dead sand, is all you need for that 10 gallon.

Good point, my skimmer barely skims anything on my 55 and I know it's not the skimmer, there just isn't that much to skim.

If you add more fish or feed more, It will skim more. LOL I'm a big time over feeder ! LOL
