Protein Skimmer Forum - Protein Skimmer info and reviews: Protein Skimmer Reviews, AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer, Tunze Nano Protein Skimmer, Octopus 800s Protein Skimmer

The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

protien skimmer operation

just a quick question for a newbie here....when my skimmer is on it foams up to the top and into the funnel thing that will let it spill over in the collection cup. my question is do i want the foam to spill over to be collected inside the cup or do you want the foam to stay inside the funnel thing? lately my skimmer has been foaming like mad and the collection cup filling quite quickly... just want to know should i turn it down or let it spill??

Turn it down, all you want is that nasty looking foam to go in to the cup, not a stream of water and foam. hope this helps.

It does depend on the level of nutrients in the tank. I turn my on really strong because I feed my corals a lot. So when I feed the corals, the skimmer skims a lot, but will eventually slows down.

You would want the foam to go in the cup. The foam might look white sometimes, but it will look different in large amounts. You have to play around with it. Mine usually gets full every 3 days. Some people gets full in a week. It depends on your water level and adjustment of the skimmer. If algae pops up in my tank, I'll make it stronger until once a day leaning it up, but if it still continues, reduce feeding and skimmer gets full twice a day.
