The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

Skimmer for my 110

I'll be needing to add a skimmer really soon. Does anyone have any advise on what ones are good for my 110? The return pump I have in my sump could be used with it.

A skimmer requires different pump that a return. The pumps depend on the type of skimmer.

I used an ETSS 800 on my 125 and it worked great, but I changed to a reef octopus extreme 300. The downdraft skimmers (ETSS) are really strong, but the water has to go either straight or down from the outlet. You will need a large stand and either a large sump or drill your sump.

I recommend octopus skimmers. I've heard ASM are good too.

note to yourself:
Always buy a skimmer that's like the minimum gallons is higher than your tank. For example the ETSS is rated for 180-400 gallons. It'll make your water super clear and there won't be any algae (not including coraline)

I have a reef octopus extreme 160 in my 65 gallon. These are great skimmers for the price. Go with either the extreme 200 or 300.
