The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

I don't have a saltwater tank so you can TOTALLY ignore this if you want...

but I think in a reef tank that small you should have a protein skimmer to keep the water under control...

Depends on what you're keeping.

Some soft corals (Idk what kind yet) and probably one orange spot goby, a firefish, and a ocellores clownfish. Probably a pistol shrimp too.

If you don't have one your water will look yellow. Corals eat what the skimmer gets but you could buy coral food for 12$ at your LFS. You should get a skimmer it makes your water much much clearer but you still need water changes.

try an HOB skimmer. They are cheaper. Yes definitely go with a skimmer I read somewhere that the corals eat the stuff the skimmer collects.

The Resun SK-05 is the skimmer I am trying in my custom built 20gal tall tank.

You could also consider a DIY model suited for a Nano tank.
