The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

Can someone Suggest a Protein Skimmer?

Hey all

I don't really know much about models, types and makes of protein skimmer, but if i am understanding right, you need differnt sized ones for different tanks??

Here is the tank i have (this is the actual buyer i got it from on ebay too:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fish-Tank-Aqua...4.c0.m14.l1262

Can someone suggest a skimmer that will work well, but not too expensive?
The tank on the link above is in UK gallons.. although come to think of it i'm not sure.. but most probably is because its a uk seller on the uk ebay.

Also, please note I don't have a sump... So I don't know if that limits types of protein skimmer I can have?

Thanks guys

I'm not a salt water keeper myself but you may find the above link helpful. Too, if you'll go to the top right hand side of this screen and do a search for protein skimmers there is a lot of good information there! Congrats on the new tank set up! Looks like a great find.
Have a good weekend!

Info on skimmers here: Protein Skimmer Info with links to some reviews at the bottom of that page. For hang on types look into Aquac, Reef Octopus, Tunze and Warner Marine skimmers.

okay thanks, will check that out now.
Do hang on ones go on the inside or the outside?

Both. The main body of the HOB skimmers hang on the outside of the tank, but there is an intake and pump, as well as a return that hang down into the water on the inside.

ah now i get it.. So here is another question... (as if you guys haven't helped me enough already) Is the bigger part on the inside or the outside? Or does that depend on the skimmer?
I read those two links now guys, thanks. And just to be safe, I will maybe try and see if i can get hold of this aquac remora Protein Skimmer which was in the reveiw. Unless the LFS suggests something else.

The bigger part by far is on the outside, but the pump/return that goes in the water are typically not really small either...definately noticeable...several inches tall and several wide. Which is one reason many opt to put a sump on their tank so they can hide the skimmer away from the display tank. Of course, that is more expense and setup on the front side.

exactly why a sump is out of the picture right now :[
Is it possible to add one later? or do you need to do it when you start the tank up?

You can add one later when it is more feasible for you.
