The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

Need suggestions for protein skimmer

Hey everyone!
I've got my 80g GSP tank up to 1.016SG, and thinking that I'd like to go full SW pretty soon. Seems like a good time to get a protein skimmer, and then add LR slowly as I raise the SG. So, I need some help on finding a good protein skimmer for a good price. It needs to overskim, since my puffers are so messy. I'm thinking one that's rated for at least 100gs. And I want it to be under $200. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks

Would WAIT on LR until SG is up to par. Lets not kill off Any inverts that maybe on/in the LR. Such dieing off will/can foul up water which may pose problems to your existing fish.
sump or Not?
If sump is not avail, HOB Skimmer but before purchasing, think of running Sump (recommend) thus eliminate possibility of spending money twice (maybe).

If sump is definitely out of question, should run skimmer ASAP since your SG is at 1.016. It may not skim as well as at 1.022 but should skim pretty well at present SG.

I dont have any recommendation since all of my Venturi skimmers were DIY except one on 20G. It's Seaclone but would not run on 80G eventhough they claim it can.
Hope this helped.

Yeah, I'm waiting on the LR until I'm at like 1.020 (?) or so.

No sump. I don't think I could get one to fit.

Thanks

I would suggest buying something a little more in the $250 range. Like this one Mike reviewed.
