The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

would i need a protien skimmer?

hi all
i was just wondering whether or not i needed a protein skimmer for my 15G SW nano reef(of which i haven't set up fully).
i plan on having 2 clown fish and a few corals. there will be around 10kg of live rock and i hope to have an anemone. there is a medium flow and strong filtration from hang on filters.

thanks

Yes you would need a skimmer. For fish only you can get away not having one, but when you start adding coral and anemonies into the equation the skimmer becomes pretty much mandatory as their water quality needs are more stringent.

What variety of clown and anemone specifically? 15 gallons may be a bit small...

You could possibly throw a few macro algaes in the display to uptake some of the nutrients, but after you see the gunk a skimmer pulls out, you won't want to run a tank without one. I'm still trying to figure out how to add one to my nano.

Too, by having a skimmer it will add more oxygen into your water. I don't have salt tanks but I do have a fresh water skimmer on my 26g . This freed an electrical socket and eliminated the need for an additional air stone since it attaches to the Aqua Clear 70. (although I have back up air supply as well)
