The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

helps with protein skimmer selection

Hi I am new to salt water tanks and am having difficulty selecting a protein skimmer. I have a 29 gallon aquarium cycling right now. I plan on it being a FOWLR aquarium. I have 7 lb of live rock in it right now and know the debate on live rock vs protein skimmer, but feel better safe than sorry. I was thinking about a seaclone 100 or 150 and thought they would be ok since my tank is so small. Any suggestions or oppinions on the seaclone ??

Thanks

I didn't realize there was a live rock vs. protein skimmer debate. Ideally you use them both.

I found out quickly that the live rock brings in all sorts or critters, I have already found copepods and aiptasia. The debate I was talking about was that some aquariest believe that live rock is more natural and prefer to stay away from protein skimmers because they remove needed nutrients from the tank

I dont have powerheads yet but am working on getting one next week
how bad are the aiptasia if no coral is in the tank, eventually I would like to try condylactis anemones but i dont have the right lighting or experience yet to attempt, i though that the aiptasia would die since i only have a flourescent light strip. any thoughts on this anemone? should i leave it alone or attempt to eliminate

For aiptasia, just get a peppermint shrimp. I had a few pieces that grew some aiptasia, got 2 peppermint shrimp for my 75 gallon, and no more aiptasia on any of the pieces.

edit: and stay away from the seaclone skimmers...

i posted on your other post
also power heads are need for aiding in movement of water to make your live rock filter you would be looking at 4x turn over of the tank volume
