The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

Marineland's Marine Pro 100 skimmer - now a review

Anyone have this one? I've been having issues with my Coralife Superskimmer. Bubble level is very inconsistent plus there are times when it doesn't produce any microbubbles.

So I thinking now maybe a good time to get a new one. Marineland has a new one that looks nice but I can't find a single review of it online. Here's the link to Drs. Foster and Smith's site for it

I haven't read anything either on that one. That one must be really new. When I'm lookin for equipment reviews I'll use a search like "Marine Pro 100 +forum" in google to see what people are saying about it on forums. Can't find anything on this one yet.

I went ahead and bought it. I'll be hooking it up either tonight or tomorrow when I do my water change. I'll take some pics and post them along with my thoughts on the unit.

The first thing I noticed is that there isn't any assembly. Just put it in the tank and plug in the power. So for ease of hooking it up...

review time people!!

Ok so I've had the Marineland Marine Pro 100 protein skimmer for close to a month now. Some basic info. I'm went from a Coralife Super Skimmer for my 65 gallon SW tank. I started having problems with my CSS but I had no idea where my receipt from LFS was where I bought it so that only left me only to purchase a new one.

The cost of the 100 gallon rated version from DFS was $199 plus shipping. The 300 gallon version is $299 plus shipping. This a brand new product from Marineland and I could not find a single review online anywhere....so here is mine of the 100 gallon version.

First off the skimmer's design is literally a thing a beauty. Marineland did an excellent job in creating a very nice look.

As you can see, everything is all located in one housing. There is no assembly required. You just drop it into your sump and plug the thing in. Now there is no option that I can tell that will allow you to make it hang on the back of your tank. So if you don't have a sump, this one is right out of question.

Here you can see the only adjustment that is needed. This allows you to adjust the level of the water inside the skimmer. Also here are the air vents. Though you do have to keep this clear.

In these following pictures you see it in my sump and it's operation:

Now as I've said, I've had this for close to a month. The instructions state that it can take up to 5 days to break it in. It's more like close to a month. It's just starting to get to the point where I'm not constantly adjusting the flow based on what the water level is in my sump.

It is taking gunk out of the water but I'm not really happy with how quickly it's taking to getting it working correctly. Nor am I happy with how I've had to keep adjusting it just so it so the fill cup wouldn't fill up in a few hours. On the plus side it is very quiet. It hardly makes any noise.

So now would I buy it again in hindsight? Probably not. For the price that the skimmer costs, I would expect it take less time to get it working properly. Also the instructions are pretty basic. Nothing major or any detailed troubleshooting tips. Also I can't find any info on how much water it can move. There is no info on GPH anywhere that I saw. Either online or in the info that it came with. For a product that cost as much as this does I'd expect more.

Thanks - a very good review! I was considering this skimmer for a small fuge that I'm adding, but I think I'll pass on this one and just stay with the Tunze 9002 that I already have on the shelf.

What size Super Skimmer did you have? Did you like it when it worked? I'm looking at the 125 model for my 75gallon setup.

Do you like it? Any complaints? I found an online store that lists the 125 model at $118 + s/h, and the Hydor Koralia 3 I want at $30 each. I hope to give them some business later this month.

It is a good. More work to set it up but it's ready to go in a 3-5 days. Mine was starting to have issues with keeping the water level in it high enough to make bubbles. That was why I was looking for a new one.

It does use a propeller. That could be why it took so long to break in. It's working pretty decently now but it should take 3 weeks or more to break the thing in, IMO.
