The protein skimmer cleans the saltwater and completely removes dissolved organics and proteins from the system into their collection cups before they get a chance to break down further and cause undesirable algae problems. Protein skimmers also help in increasing the dissolved oxygen level in the aquarium water.

Question about Protein skimmers

So i've read reviews on protein skimmers, and know that seaclone = horrible, but I still have a ? about them.

I know someone selling theirs for 30 bucks (and they said it works perfectly fine), and it's rated up to 150-gallons he said.

Now, my SW tank i'm in-process of setting up (slowly, but surely) is going to be at most 60-gallons due to space constraints (I'm looking at possibly a 40 or 50 gallon).

Even though the seaclone skimmers suck, if I were to buy his, would the fact that it's rated for 150 gallons make it worth it for my much smaller tank? Or should I still stick with a better kind?

Thanks everyone!!

I've no experience to back davbrown but i believe it to very true. I will be spending quite a lot on my skimmer with the hope of less muck buildup and better water quality.

Check out Super Skimmer. I got one from LFS for 100$. But they sell them online. My model is rated for 65gal and its on a 75gal tank. Doing a nice job, but there is a lot of micro bubbles on that side of the tank. I will fix it with an article I found online...
