ultimate predators

i have recently finished my pond, which is a bit crazy really and i know people here wont agree with whats in it.
but the thing is i live in a small thai village so my family and other people keep putting fish in it!!!

i was going to keep oscars to breed and sell even though there about 50 cents here but it was just my dream to have a pond with about 12 or so oscars in it but that never happened.

all the fish are from the mekong river that are in my pond and are as follows(i know its crazy) about 10 snakeheads(3 different kinds) about 6 ghost knifes, 4 bronze fb knifes, 25 (poor) 3 spot gouramis, 5 tinfoil barbs, 3 tiger fish and a few more i dont know but they are big ugly catfish.

pond is about 15ft by 7ft and 3ft deep and the reason why i never put oscars in is it gets so hot in the mid day sun and i mean hot, but all the native fish seem perfect as they can eat alot of fresh prawn (4inch) and frogs

i also get snakes in the pond, we have killed 2 poisonous and 2 non poisonous in the 3 weeks its been going.

im sorry to say there is no filtration but because of the monsoon season just now the water is crystal as it over flows at one end.

i wonder what will happen in this pond as i know people here will just keep putting fish in as they try to be nice.

just thought id tell the world about my pond!

Good morning Podgethai. Your pond sounds VERY interesting. Something to think about, you may want to put up a small sign that states "please don't add fish, it is completely stocked"...something along those lines. Hopefully you can share some pictures with us in the not too distant future? Have a good day!

We had the same problem with our pond in the front yard. The neighbors would take their kids fishing and bring home live bluegill. The kids would want to keep them as pets, the parents didn't want to fuss with a huge tank, so they would end up saying "go put it in the pond". We ended up with anchorworm from a bluegill that got tossed in without our knowledge. We just kept telling all the neighbors and kids to not put any fish in, or at least to ask us first, so the fish in the pond wouldn't get sick. That seemed to work after a while. I think it finally sunk in .

That is fascinating how that many fish can live w/o a filter

Hi podgethai:

Wow, that's a 2,356 US gal (1,962 UK gal) pond you got there!

Certainly a wonderful place for fish to thrive. As long as you keep it heavily planted I figure they will keep water parameters stable in the water in the dry season, maybe requiring topping off evaporated water.

I kept a quite small pond from age 7 to 23 -I'm 44 now- (seemed huge to me at the time) without other filtration than soil substrate and plenty of plants (rooted as hygrophila species, floating as Tropical Hornwort and Anacharis, surface floating as Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce).

It is true that at the time I had no test kits -neither idea about the nitrogen cycle- but the overall good health and behavior of my fish (gouramis, livebearers, goldfish, black moores) suggested they were fine.

I add up to those waiting for some pictures!
