| | Fish Master | Pond Ideas - post pics I'm trying to get ideas for my pond, but I don't have many ponds to go by.
Would anyone be willing to post a few pics of THEIR ponds so that I can get some ideas? I want to see what other ponds look like. Thanks! |

| | Fish Keeper | I've put pics up before - but here is mine.
My sister's is basically a rectangle dug 2/3 of the way into the ground and built up around the outside with the same type of block as on the front of mine. Then she built up a rock waterfall on one corner (sorry I don't have pics of hers). |

| | Fish Master | Well, mine is not nearly as impressive as Gremin's and is still a work in progress, but here are a few pics of mine. Its a 50 gallon preformed pond stocked with fancy goldies, minnows, and a paradise fish. Plants include anarchis, lillies, water hyacinth, water lettuce, and some unknown marginal plant, lol |

It started out a smaller one with block and plants in pots around - then moved to where it is - then I got a larger one when my first one sprung a leak (I dropped a rock on the shelf and punched a hole in it). I got it second hand and the gal said it was about 180 gallons. |

| | Fish Master | Okay, I have to have a lined one, as it needs to be 4 ft. deep so it won't freeze solid in out crazy cold winters.
What plants survive the winter?
Another big question, how the heck do you cycle a pond?! |

beth | Checked her pond, nothing to show, just a plastic tub with nothing in it or around it.

Another big question, how the heck do you cycle a pond?! | You would cycle the pond the same way you would a tank - just on a larger scale. Will it have a filter/pump or are you going to go "natural" with no external filter and just depend on the plants and the whole ecosystem thing to keep it in balance? How big are you going to make it? 4 feet deep would be good, but how big length and width? I would suggest getting it built and running for a while before adding any fish. Then add only one or two at a time so you don't trigger a mini cycle. Especially if you go with goldfish since they are such heavy waste producers. If you aren't sure what types of plants would do well, you could always contact your local cooperative extension service. They are always a good resource. For New York, I think this is it: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/home |

| | Fish Master | I'm going to take some pics of my back yard tomorrow, & post them here. Hopefully it's going to be pretty big. Like 1/3 of my yard. Less to mow, you know?
I think I may TRY to go a natural pond, I def. want it heavily planted. But that's mainly b/c the filters are so crazy expensive & they confuse the heck out of me. |

| | Fish Keeper | I have an external filter on mine - this one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...4&pcatid=10394 I don't know what would be best for your cold winters. I don't have to worry about frozen pipes, or my pond freezing over so my filter/pump runs year round. |

| | Fish Master | If the pump is constantly running, I don't think the pipes would freeze, but I could be wrong. A natural pond would be ideal, then I could just have a small fountain/waterfall to keep water moving. |
