An interesting pond idea I came up with.

I was thinking the other day and a few interesting pond ideas came to me.

Idea number one was a saltwater pond. Not sure what one would keep in it but it would be interesting and unique. Not sure on the viability of the idea though.

Idea number two was a tropical pond with red belly piharana or other amazon type fish. I know that would require some serious heating and filtering but it would also be unique and different.

the way I see ponds are more for the top surface of the fish and plants and almost like a tranquil place to sit and listen to...unless you can somehow make it see thru and above ground with rocks planted around it per say...id wonder about the money and resources needed for both of the ponds you describe and never seeing the fish? im sure it would be unique tho!! just not sure how much enjoyment you would have with them?

Good point, one would never see the fish which is the main point of a pond.

The National Zoo has a huge Amazon exhibit that sounds exactly like the second pond you were describing.

I would think that a saltwater pond would be a total headache... but the second would be cool if you could take care of the heating and filtration problems.

The ancient Romans(?) I believe had saltwater ponds of a sort... It would be neat especially if you had like a terranced garden have the pond partially dug in so that one side was completely visible while the other had a pond like appearence...

A salt water pond if it rains it will kill most of ur fishes if in the winter ur heating manages to fail so does the cycle and killl most of ur fishes SAlt water pond would require a HUGE DISTANCE to make rainwater not altar the salanity or pH.
Pihranna's be cool but what if a little kid sticks his hand near the pond to feed what he thinks will come "goldfish" and he falls into the water after the pihranna biting him.

There would be a fence around the pond if it had nasty fish in it. Though it is a misconception that Piharanna's will just attack anything that gets in the water with them. I was watching one show and this guy was swimming with red bellies and not getting touched.

Sounds like the salt pond idea is pretty much a bust though. Kind of figured it would prolly be high maintenance.

That happens when there is other food sources available. In the wild, when all hte fruit is falling off the trees into the water you can swim because the pirahnas would eat the fruit.

What I think would probably be the biggest problem would be other animals, like birds, cats, raccoons, etc. getting into the pond.
Also, one idea you could do that I've seen is a pond, but also one side built out of acrylic/glass so that you can see the fish from the side too.

My dream pond is built in a hillside. One wall - maybe curved inward - made out of heavy duty acrylic so I could see into the pond with a bench so I could just sit and look into the pond through the clear wall. Then as you go up the hill on either side, Gentle landscaping/wide shallow rock steps or path up around either side to the top where it is more pond-like with benches to sit and watch the pond from the surface with a waterfall or two or maybe a stream/waterfall combo. If only I had the space (and the money) it would take to set up something like that.

THere's a really neat pood in a local mall here. There's an indoor mini-golf park and they have this huge water layout to it. So in this one big section they've got massive amounts of goldfish... I'd scrap the mini gold but keep the skylights, plants, and turf to go with the pond.
