pond/lily pad help!

We just bought a house and inherited a koi pond with the property. I like it, but it's overgrown with lily pads. I need to know how many the pond really needs and which ones to keep. I'm going to try to upload a picture to show you.
And any tips on keeping koi would be wonderful. They just left us a bucket of food and that was it.

Headed out to work, but I will get you some answers this afternoon, this evening.
I have been keeping ponds for over 15 years.

any help is greatly appreciated. We need to know how to clean it too. And now apparently our waterfall in the back isn't working properly.

Is there a pump for the waterfall?
If so, where is the pump located in the pond?
Koi are just like other fish, they need variety in their diet.
I use Kensfish.com for my source of koi food.

From the picture you posted it looks like goldfish not koi.
The first step for cleaning would be to remove all the plants, it looks like they are probably potted.
Place the fish in a large bucket so they are out of harms way while you clean.

Is there a substrate on the pond bottom?

If not, scoop out all the gunk off the bottom of the pond.

Is there any type of filtering system on the pond?
