Drink cooler in back yard

Okay, please don't linch me, I know there are a lot of serious fish people here.

I have a 10 gal tank indoor with platies that is doing fine. I also have some guppies in a large cooler in the back yard. They have been there for about 6 months and seem to do well, despite my not doing that much for them. I do partial water changes every 2-3 weeks by unplugging the drain at the bottom, holding net over it (so the fly don't drain out).

After getting the indoor tank and doing more reading, I'm wanting to do more for the "cooler" pond in the back yard. Short of putting in an actualy pond, what would people suggest?

For now, the only thing I have planned is to get some Java moss, put it near the drain, good for fry and also to make it less a chance for them to slip out the drain when I do water changes. I'm boiling a coconut shell right now.

Any advice is greatly apprciated. I live in Hawaii and no heater seems to be fine so far. I have no filter, no other plants in there (it sits under a palm tree).

Thank you

We keep tropical fish outside for severall months a year here in Tennessee.
I would suggest getting some type of floating plant as well as the Java moss.
We use kiddy pools and cattle watering troughts as well as inground pools/ponds for this.
