| Did I keep them up too late? Ok. Is this boredom or what? Well, we did stay up a bit late watching our favorite movie last night...
Out of 6 goldfish, 2 are napping, 2 are staring at the tv which isn't on, one is so bored that she keeps swimming to the top grabbing a mouthful of air, and then swimming down to the bottom to let the bubble go. She seems so bored that she just wants to entertain herself while the others mope. The last one is the only one acting like a normal fish, swimming around and pecking at the gravel.
Should I turn on the tv?
Now they are starting to be a little more active. My goodness, they are lazy today. You'd think they were partying all night and were trying to recover. |

The Alpha-female is the one napping. And my lazy, couch potato baby is bugged because she is in his hiding spot when he likes to sleep late. He is trying to squeeze in next to her but she is too big. It is kind of funny to watch.
I think I'll add some food to see if I can give them a kick start. It is getting late. |

yea, mine used to do that when they were younger. The Alpha-female is an old lady now.
BUT
I put the food in and WOW! They are all going at it!
You'd think I never feed them! They are such pigs!
I love these guys, they are so funny! |

| My barbs swarm at the top whenever anyone comes anywhere close to the tank. Its funny to watch, and funner to watch them go around frantically trying to inhale every flake they can like they hadn't eaten in years. |

| I have to say, that whole bubble thing that my other female was doing was weird. I never saw her do that before. She was swimming in circles, going up to the top and then swimming down while she held the air in her mouth. Then she would let it go and watch it float to the top as if she found that amusing. She is getting old too. Is she getting senile? These guys are getting weirder and weirder as they get older. I am surprised that they still come up with strange habits. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can with a fish! |

| When he was about an inch shorter, my CAE would amuse himself by swimming upside down from one sucking-spot to another. Now his favorite thing to do is suck onto the glass where the filter lets out and just stay there until another fish swims by- then he goes right to sucking on the gravel like he's embarrassed the other fish caught him off-duty. | Fish do play! In my outdoor patio pond (which, BTW, hasn't frozen up yet even though it hit -31C last night. the de-icer seems to work, plus it is covered ...), I have quite a powerful pump for the summer. The outlet is across the tank in the opposite corner and just swooshes out against the corner, sreaming upwards about 15-20cm. A couple of the mid-sized fish took a liking to the swoosh and spent hours pretending to be salmon and actually swimming 'upstream'. At times, one in particular was actually above the pond level and having a whale of a good time.
About fish staying up late though, I kept my tropicals up late last winter over Christmas and they started to shimmy. I started turning the lights out earlier and they recovered. Can they get overtired?
Personality-wise, goldies have lots, next on the list are the cory-cats. |

| I'm not sure about that, when I went on vacation the lady who was dog/fish sitting for me she didn't turn off the aquarium light for me! the fish were okay though. |

| My fish have their own timetable...the lights come on at 4:00pm, and go off at 10:30pm...i feed them at 7:30am...that way, they know exactly when they're going to be fed, so when i walk past them at 7:30am they all swim to the top, but any other time and they stay at the bottom! Its the same for bedtime, at 10:30, all the fish have their own asigned sleeping spots. The betta sleeps in the cave, and the tetras hide in the big green plant at exactly 10:30 even if i havn't turned the lights off yet! |
