Hello,

I inherited a 55 gallon tank with one huge gold fish. I wanted to get him some company so I bought 2 additional fish. One of them was a 'comet' type but it had black markings on all of its fins and around its mouth. Now that it's grown a bit, all the black has disappeared. Is this normal? Is it something lacking in its diet? Or do I need to do something different with the water?

Totally normal.
Most goldfish change color as they grow older.

gold fish are born black - the black will fade at different rates for different fish as they grow. every once in a while you will have one that stays black, I have a male that is black/copper colored. when the sun hits his belly, you can see the underlying orange.
