What would you put in a 55g?

Imagine you have a planted 55g in place with everything running perfectly well and cycle is complete. In your own idea, what would the livestock be in your 55g? How many and why?

I'd do 15 cardinal tetras, and three pairs of Rams or another Dwarf Cichlid like an Apistogramma.

Definately Discus!!! Going to do that soon.... My granddaughter (she just turned 11) has recently gotten interested in my fish and she has had me show her the pics, of discus, from Matts collection and Aquabid. Am moving my apistos around in the other tanks and out of our 55!!! Hate to loose such a young hobbiest! (and a great excuse for me to get some) Just cant decide which ones!!

I think I would go with some of the larger Rainbow Fish. They are really nice looking and pretty hardy. I would be afraid to try Discus (although I would love to) because my water has a pH of about 7.8 and I believe Discus like soft water with a lower ph. Plus from what I've read they tend to be pretty high maintance.

Some angelfish are quite territorial especially with gouramies, well that's what I heard from some members here...

Yeah I am. haha I knew that =) But quite hard to find in my area. If I want the good ones, I have to go very far into the other states to get it! LOL How are the Discus in US?

Good, because we get them from Malaysia!! haha. Most of the US really nice discus are all imported. The most known place over there is Penang (Pulau Pinang), i've always wanted to visit there just to see the fish! haha

Yeah, Penang! I haven't gone there for a few years now. Hoping to go there soon so I can get some cool fish there too How much would the imported Discus cost in the states?

They are pretty affordable. You can get them through an importer for anywhere from $25-300 each. Depends on strain and quality (Grad A, show quality, etc).

You got a few down in Johor Malaysia too. Jeffrey Yang of Fish Trade Zone and Forrest. And then Lawrence Soon of Lucky Tropical in Penang. Then you have all of Singapore which is loaded.....UGH i'm jealous.

wow! $25++ each? I can get lil ones here for around 5-10 ringgit which is $1.40-$2.80. The more expensive ones here are around more than $10 each.

Hmm... wow! U sure know a lot even though your far away I wish I could send you some but I think the delivery charge would cost more than the fish! haha

The discus world is surprisingly small, so i have talked to quite a few breeders/importers outside of the US hehe. Most of the fish i had were shipped in from Malaysia. Can't wait to get more. And wow thats cheap.

I love discus but there is no way I would want the amount of work that goes with them.
My vote goes for 15-20 Cardinals, 6 cories, 6 otos and a pair of rams or apistos.

Well... 8 Otos - lovely small algae eaters! 6 Panda corys - cuteness! 8 Rummy nose tetras - pretty schoolers! 6 Bleeding heart tetras - possibly my favourite fish! 1 Clown Pleco - totally awesome fish to have! 8 Hatchets - I'd love to try them again because I love them! 3 Bolivian rams/Panda Apistos - 1 male 2 female. And... Shed loads of plants! Perhaps a bit overstocked but the filter would be for 75-100gals.

A school of neon tetra or guppy a whole bunch because they are big attention attractors and my friend would be so jealous

A traditional mixed community is what i'd go for! I love platies, I grew up with platies, i'm still growing up with platies, and I'll grow old with platies, so I think I might make them my main attraction in the tank... maybe something like this

6 Platies (2 males, 4 females) of varied colors
5 Bronze Corydoras Catfish
1 Flying Fox
7 Harlequin Rasboras

or if mother nature allows me to care for the first neon tetra sized killer whales, I'll take the challenge upon myself to create the largest population of Miniature Killer Whales in the world!!!
