PC ftw

I use windows only for two reasons.

1. I'm a gamer, I suppose it's now possible to play games on a Mac...but it's very impractical.

2. I got tired of all the tomfoolery of trying to make things work with Linux and MacOS...or find alternatives to windows programs. Everything is made for windows, so you don't have to fuss with it.

Linux is free...but it's worth every penny IMO.

I use a laptop PC. When I bought mine, the cheapest Macbook was $400 more and had pretty much the same specs. I just couldn't justify the cost.

haha! my main justification is that I don't want to be "one of 'those' people with apples." lol

That's just in addition to the costliness and hassle.

PC all the way. Macs are overpriced pieces of garbage, you only pay for the name.

I build my own computers so PC owns Mac. I'll never own another Mac.

Mac (though this may change with Google's OS).

Microsoft's ever-rotting pile of garbage that is known as Windows needs to have competitors. They successfully squashed all competitors with unfair and illegal tactics for far too long. This is the main reason that it's so difficult/expensive to use other OS's. You've either got to have a certain set of skills to monkey the programs to work, or you need to pay someone else to make an OS that is both high-quality and easy to use.

I started with an old G3 (beige), then a G4, a eMac, then an iMac. Since the beginning, ( and I have used both systems and tend to agree with the sirdarksol), I have never lost one picture, one document, or had a system crash where everything was lost...can't say thats true for my family who use pc's.
It cost more, last longer, and doesn't crash. You get what you pay for

See i always see people complain about Windows but in all of my years using it i've never had any real problems with it. 64-bit Vista here and love it.

The fact that you can build your own comps suggests that you possess skills that the average PC user doesn't have. You likely know how to bypass the problems that are endemic in the PC before those problems hit you.

I wouldn't say my last two PCs have been problem free (and I'm not counting the damaged drive, which was due to power loss), but they've run okay. However, that's because I know a bit about how to avoid these problems (largely by avoiding Microsoft's programs as much as possible).

Lastly, I'm still amused that one of the big computer magazines named a Mac as the best computer to run Windows Vista on when the OS first came out.

I say PC. I've never had a problem with them and I've been using them since I was able. I've used macs and wasn't impressed. Even took some Advanced Mac classes in high school but I can't say that I'm being fair. Haven't used a Mac in forever and I dont' really like change so..lol.

So true. My family always has me fixing their PC's, and I am always just baffled about how they keep messing them up! They've crashed their computer twice this year...TWICE! I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

(I've been running the same install for 2 years now...)

Vista is actually very similar to XP, it's just more modern. It looks and feels like any other modern OS (Ubuntu particularly), but everything's still in the same place. Don't let the fancy icons fool you, it's the same.

I love the way Vista manages the memory. The more memory you have, the faster it runs...pretty sweet. I'm holding out until Windows 7 in October, but I'll probably get it for my birthday (January).

I am proud that I have circumvented an entire Windows generation. hahaha.

(well almost...we got it for my wife's new PC because we had to buy SOMETHING...and we didn't want to buy the antiquated XP)

PC = Video Games and much much easier to use. XP is better than vista because vista can't help that much if it isn't connected to the internet. XP is easier to use too. I use vista but miss XP. XD

1 laptop with vista, 1 desktop with vista, 1 desktop with XP.

My big issue with Mac is availability of software. I don't care how stable the system is if I can't get the programs I want to run.

1 Lap-top with Windows Vista = 400$
2 desktops with Windows XP = 950$
1 Forgotten Windows 95 in the basement (amazingly runs faster then on of my XP desktops ) = 75$

Watching a generation of technology inantiquate itself = Priceless

I voted PC but really... I don't know. I've never and had any major troubles with my XP or Vista or anything. Sure as my computer got older the internet ran faster then it did but that's not really the OS's fault. I dislike Mac's because I don't understand them. I can't find anything on them, I can't use them. However deep deep inside me is a computer nerd dying to escape... and so when I have the chance to get a 2nd computer to play with I'll be picking up a Linux os.

you can just install linux alongside windows. It will resize the windows partition and install a dual boot loader automagically.

no need to get a new pc ;-D

I recommend Linux Mint, it's a derivative of Ubuntu. It comes installed with a lot of software that Ubuntu can't bundle for licensing reasons.

even so, I still prefer windows. Web pages don't display properly in Linux for some reason, and a lot of media codecs use a lot of resources because they're not native to the Linux kernel.

...and you can't play PC games :-(

http://www.linuxmint.com/

(download the .iso and use nero or similar to burn the image to a CD. Then boot with the CD, it will first run the entire OS off the CD (see windows do that lawlz) and give you the option of installing to the hard drive if you like it.

You can also install it to a sufficiently sized USB flash drive (I used a 4gb drive), if you don't want to goof with your windows install. it won't run as well as on a hard drive though. I strongly recommend physically unplugging your PC's hard drive before doing this, you don't want to accidentally overwrite your windows partition! )

so maybe install it to a flash drive? A 4gb flash drive is much cheaper than a whole new PC.

That is assuming that your laptop allows you to boot from USB drives. I think most computers do these days, but you might have to do some research to make sure.

You could then install install it to the flash drive from a friend's desktop. I definitely want you to physically unplug the hard drive to eliminate any foolish mistakes.

then you can just plug your flash drive into any computer and run Mint Linux everywhere you go!
