barbs will nip the rams' fins.
LFS tells me barbs should be kept with barbs.
maybe some other member may have more experience & advise you further.

I would go with a tetra or some other schooling fish besides barbs. Rams are shy for the most part and fast fish the same sized or bigger would scare them. Barbs are nippers too.

Maybe some dwarf neon rainbows. They look pretty cool and you could put about 6 or 7 of them in your tank. Maybe livebearers or tetra but if you want barbs go with cherry barbs and get a school of like 8-10. That way any aggresion that they might have with go to each other. They are very peaceful fish.

What about a livebearer tank? I have them and I love them. Or you could do some rasboras there are a lot of different species out there. I have 3 magnificant rasboras (can't spell) and they are funny, especially if you have bubbles.

I have found that bubbles make fish more active. I put them in two of my tanks and the current has my fish swimming all over the place. They also have air stones incorperated into decorations. I have a waterfall/air stone piece in my 20 gal
