I'm a Nightmare Before Christmas kid at heart. I hate that it has become a "goth" image for some, the movie is hardly gothic in nature. Danny Elfman rocked that movie too.
(perhaps it fills some void in ruining Christmas seeing that I really dislike Chistmas)

I disagree. The heart of what is gothic is that which is romantic (look at the word beyond the simple meaning of "love," but a strong sense of some ideal, which can be love, chivalry, adventure. Nightmare has all of them). Combined with the Halloween imagery, it's perfect for the goth crowd.

The "goth" mentality, at least how I interpret it, isnt very prevalent in this movie. Goth, as defined by several pop-culter sites, is an image and lifestyle that emphasis some sort of painful experience/existance and living against societies rules. In NBC Jack is simply trying to do something different than the same halloween he always does. He wants to always do something bigger and better than years past but feels like he always dissapoints the society that so loves him (hardly goth). He discovers "christmas" and trys to get his society to embrace it, all the while no seeing the love interest so trajically seeking his attention. Aside from the halloween thing this is not too different than you run of the mill romantic comedy with the male and female roles a bit switched. The images and overall mood are what the goth culture has embraced. I dont see many kids decked out in thier goth gear with a Santa hoody, or any messanger bags with elves making toys. The characters thought up by Tim Burton do lend themselves to Hot Topic merchandising well, but the overall theme of the movie is NOT gothic in the least.
I cant hate it too much. I have picked up some great schwag from the movie in recent years so its not bothered me too much.

Hmmm... Painful experience, living against societies rules. Yep both are present in spades, just surrounded by amusing circumstances. In fact, your own description is an excellent description of the type of story a goth would enjoy. You think that someone who wrongly feels like he is disappointing his society and therefore embarks on a doomed-to-fail quest isn't gothic? Being a fan of many varieties of gothic stories, I can tell you that is an excellent story basis.
You may think that it's just the image that goths have attached themselves to, but it's not. To be sure, there are going to be some, but there are some who have attached themselves to the gothic subculture because of the fashion.

I didn't really have one favorite when I was growing up but I'd say the top few would be Jungle Book, Toy Story, Lion King, and Aladdin. My favorite more recent childrens movies would have to be Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

Yep! Jack is a classic "tragic" character-- there are a lot of stories I consider gothic in nature that don't involve a lot of kids running around in too much eyeliner and writing bad poetry. But let's face it, Tim Burton's themes are considered "gothic" in nature because of how dark/tragic the stories are, not just because of the look & feel art involved, but the types of characters he chooses to portray. I mean, really -- the Corpse Bride!? And Sweeney Todd, which is the first Burton film I didn't make it to the theatre to see, but I'm familiar with the story. Sooooo creepy!!
I can't believe I forgot to list Sleeping Beauty...

Sweeney Todd, was amazing. From multiple standpoints it had a lot of great qualities that I like in movies. I like the way his art direction is obvious when you look for it but not noticed when watching the movie. Its really quite a good skill. Ridley Scott has this ability as well, although some of his movies are obvious in thier themes. Something Burton has always done is create things that are awkwardly beautiful, with his twisting of line and use of shadow (or sometimes lack there of). I have a large background in art (I sculpt when I have time) and love seeing it in my films.

My fav childrens movie is Ice Age because I laughed almost constantly through it and the baby was so adorably cute! Although I recently watched Kung Fu Panda and loved it too - laughed through most of it too.
