| My mom bought us guppies, goldfish, snails, and an albino frog when I was around 12 but . none of them lasted long-a couple months at the most. The first fish I ever bought myself was when I was in college. I got a red and a blue betta which I called Hans and Frans lol. And as seems to be the case with many others, I did not know anything about the cycle or gallons for size and what not so of course they were in 1/2 gallon bowls. But they did live about 3 years each! After that I bought another one (blue with shreaded fins) that I had in a vase on my desk at work. He also lived for about 3 years but ended up getting fin rot and died RIP Bob. So now that I know about the cycle and all of that, I am starting completely fresh with my 29 gallon tank! |

| My first fish was a neon tetra when I was 7... each one of my siblings got one for christmas one year and we had them all (5) in a one gallon "betta vase" with a plant at the top... no filter or heater and they ended up dying within the first 5 hours....those were the days... |

| When I was about 14 I got a 15 gal for x-mas, it was a community tank with angles, guppies, sordtails, zebras, Grommies, soon after my first beta, then several more tanks and a lot more fish.
That was back about 1960, its come a long way sense the days of metal frame tanks with black tar to hold the glass in.

| Goldfish were my first fish as a kid--'Goldie' and 'Blackie' ... a common and black moor goldfish that got to share a 1 gallon bowl. Unsurprisingly they lived less then a month. I think the poor moor died after barely a week.
... and goldfish were what I started with again last year. Not by choice, let me tell you! I got them given to me as a 'gift' along with a ten gallon tank. Only one of the original 4 survived, but my obsession to keep things/animals alive and healthy kicked in and LED me to discover fishlore. 'Thing 1' is still alive thanks to that, and is about 3X his original size after a summer in the pond |

| I'm having a hard time remembering which came first...I think it was the 20gH with the 6" platinum comet goldfish. I was 10 or 11 and walked down to the library (it was less than 1/4 mile from my house). There was this guy sitting out front with a tank with a goldfish in it. It had a filter (can't remember what kind now, but probably an AquaTech or HOB Whisper...just a cheap thing), but no substrate or anything. He sold me the tank and goldfish for $15 (my entire allowance). I went home and "borrowed" my dad's wheelbarrow, loaded up the tank and trundled it home. My parents were furious, but by the time we got back to the library, the guy was already gone. So, my parents made me live with my decision and let me keep the tank with the stipulation that my room not smell like fish. I grabbed some gravel from the driveway and rinsed it off with the hose and stuck it in the tank. I would change some of the water out every couple weeks or so and feed the goldfish every day. He was a very friendly fish and recognized me. He would even let me pick him up out of the water. I was devastated when he died six or so months later. I wanted nothing to do with the tank anymore, so I gave it away. My parents felt bad for me and bought me a 1 gallon cylindrical tank with a pretty blue and red male veiltail betta and three neon tetras. I remember getting SO angry with the betta because it killed the three neons as soon as they were put into the tank with him (watched him do it). For the longest time after that I absolutely hated bettas because the one I had (that I ended up giving to a friend because I was mad with him) ate my neons. It would be another 12 years before I started fish-keeping again and guess what my first fish was...a betta! lol |

| Wow Paige, that's amazing that your love of bettas came from that horrible experience! I think I would have been traumatized if I had seen a betta eat my neons! |

| These are all great stories.
I started off with a feeder fish I won at a carnival when I was.. five, I think. He came in a plastic cup that was so small he was curled inside it. Poor thing. I put him in a 10-gallon tank with distilled water and gravel and a filter. Lived more than a decade even though I was an awful fishkeeper and didn't have a clue what I was doing. I still have a soft spot for feeder goldfish. They remain my favorite fish even though I don't keep them anymore because of their tank requirements. |

| When I first put fish in my tank, I bought guppies, a pair of red honey gourmis, and some neons. The first fish out of the bags into the tank were neons though, so I guess they were my first fish. I didn't know what the heck I was doing, so floated the bags for 20 mins then let them out into the tank. 4 of my neons died, as did one of my gouramis, and all of my guppies except one. |

| My first fish was the stereotypical goldfish at the fair in a small bowl and of course he died a short time after. But I guess that's when a lot of people actually start learning on how to properly keep fish. Live and learn. |
