Plant Poll
Plants plant everywhere! What's your opinion? First tell me if plants being in with healthy fish would deter you from purchasing a plant. Then tell me what plants not on this list, should even a small fish store carry? What is the basics you expect to see. please forgive misspellings
Hornwort
Anacharis
Cabomba
Crypts (green and bronze)
Water Spirit
Wisteria
Amazon Swords
Java Fern
Java Moss
and feel free to tell me if any of these are not what you would expect to see.

I don't presume that any fish store will carry any particular plant. Despite how common it is among aquarists, I have yet to see a story carry Java moss. I've only seen Java fern once. I often see Anacharis and Anubias, as well as various swords.

I think in a store there should be a plant tank for selling plants but also plants in with fish but not for sale.

You can come up here, but I'd rather not live in Virginia. My wife (and her job) is here.

You could add anubias nana - it's a cute little plant that is very hardy and tolerant of different conditions. Also, foreground plants, which seem to be less common, such as hairgrass, baby tears, sagittaria, etc, are always eye catchers for me.

That is a nice plant. Our store doesnt have high light available yet though We have to rearrange. We do that at the store I work at too (order what people ask for). I just want to get an idea of what kind of plants aquarist are looking for. Bolbitus heudelotii is one I saw that looked like a neat eye catching fern. Any comment on that one?

I too had troubles when i was looking for java moss. I ended up getting it from a really small no name pet store and when i asked him about it he reached in the tank and gave me a handful. It was free, i washed it good and put it in my 29gal instead of quarantining it. Now i have ramshorn and pond snails bad move but i finally got java moss.

Some of my favorite plants are from the Anubias family. I have a good number of them, Anubias barteri, Anubias nana(dwarf, broadleaf and narrowleaf) and I'm going to pick up my special order of Anubias hastifolia. I also think that the plants from the cyrptocoryne family are really good too. Just hope you can find a good fish store that will be willing to do special orders for you.

On your list, the ones I routinely see locally are Anacharis, Wisteria, Amazon Swords, and (lace) Java Fern. There are also usually those lily bulbs and various Vallisneria. I've never seen Java Moss, Crypts, or Anubias in stores, though. I love my Anubias, but I need to move them...they are under too much light and are being covered by algae...
As for the plant thing...many stores have virtually all their freshwater tanks that require roughly the same parameters on the same huge filter, so even if the plant tank is fish-free, it could still have whatever the fish in nearby tank are carrying floating around. So as long as the plants look healthy and you quarantine them, do a dip, or both, I don't think it matters either way.

I voted Yes because I would just keep the plants in a large container for about a week before adding them to the tank, just to be on the safe side.
I know this plant wasn't on the list but I think it would be good if fish stores sold najas grass. I have yet to see that plant anywhere in my area and that's a plant I would like to have for my betta's tank.
The only plants I've never seen at a LFS are Water Sprite and Java moss.
