Longer than five minutes drive, which is pretty depressing. One that is five minutes WALK away would be pretty great. And yet, it's not like I live in a rural area or anything - there aren't tons of fish stores around here that I much like - there aren't much at all, actually. I've found a couple.

Well, I prefer to shop at the Family owned store in Monroeville, which is about 15 miles away, or about 1/2 drive (heart of the worst designed traffic nightmare in Pennsylvania) To get there I pass 2 Petcos, a Petland, and a Petsmart. No issue driving past any of them to get to Elmers, the sales staff have a clue, the managers are certified fish nuts, the prices are competitive, and fish are their primary focus. All other pets are a sideline. I'll browse the local Pet Supplies Plus for driftwood and maintenance supplies if SWMBO drags me along when she goes to the Irwin Target, it's less than 5 miles from my house, but I doubt I'd ever buy a fish from them.

The local fish store (a small pet shop) is about a 5 minute drive. The bigger box pet stores such as Petsmart and Petco are about a 25 minute drive from here.

The closest I go to is 80 miles away, a 1 1/2 hour drive home with fish! The next is in Anchorage, and that is 120 miles and a 3 hour drive home. Then 2 or three times a year I go to Fairbanks a 300 mile drive north, that is at least a 5 hour drive home.
This is why I started buying off of aquabid this year, it ends up not much more stress, and the prices are better, and about the same % success in getting home with healthy fish. Buying locally I usually have good luck, but there have been times, like the preg. molly I lost on the way home.
For me it is better on my wallet not to have one so close.

I have one that is 5 minutes drive and one that's 10. The good one is an hour and 15 minutes away. At the closest, I end up helping them more than they help me. They do give me a discount on filter pads though, so can't complain to much. Though, they're clueless. Neither of the local stores are very good. The one 70 miles away is not to shabby. The owner knows what she's doing and they are primarily an aquatic store. Kind of nice to shop for fish at an actual FISH store. Nice to see healthy Marine stock too. The 2 near by are pitiful. Buying from their marine stock always feels like rescue.

Closest to me is 30 minutes away and it's a Petsfart. Found a different store online yesterday which I believe is more aquaticly inclined and is approx 1 hour drive away that I'll check out in the next few weeks.

Someone at the fishclub told us about a great LFS about 10-15min south of us so we'll check that out soon. They're supposed to have all kinds of plecos and fish not easily found at the chain stores.

I'm about 10 minutes away from Petco and Petsmart. But the good LFS that I buy my fish and most of my supplies is close to an hour away if traffic is decent. They're a bit more expensive but they're worth it. They know what they're talking about and have a good selection. All they deal in is fish and have a great SW section.

there's a pet shop in the town i live, but they dont sell fish or fish supplies , just guinea pig food and hay etc! they couldnt expand either as its tiny! its like a cupboard! they couldnt fit a tank in there! so i have to go to the bigger towns, both of which are about a 15 min drive away, then i have 3 lfs's. 2 of which are pets at home which are hopeless for buying fish from! the other shop though has loads of variety and their stocks vary from week to week, so always something new to explore in there, and the staff are friendly and glad to chat to you.
