Oh am sure they're not buying show quality. They're just very new to the koy thing so am sure they wouldn't really recognise a show quality one if it bit them in the butt.

Small koi for $50 Are they buying show quality? With how readily koi breed, the "junk" koi go for $5 or less around here. They're very pretty fish, they just don't have the specific traits that breeders look for (stuff I don't even understand).

If they're anything like our parents, yours have the attitude of "i'm older, so i'm smarter and know better" and they treat our opinions as worthless and trivial.
tell him that he should look for some websites for the Coy enthusiast to see how Coy owners take care of them properly. He's sure to find plenty of info reinforcing what you've told him, since it's cruel and foolish to store them in a small tank. he'll just end up with a broken tank, dead coy and an indoor flood.

I thought I'd gotten through to my dad but yesterday, we went to the chinese restaurant, and he cracked a joke about the fact that I probably thought the fish at the chinese restaurant needed a lake.
This after hours of painstakingly showing him references that condone what I am saying about them needing WAY more than a fish bowl.

 to your Dad
My parents can't seem to understand why we'd want so many fish tanks. Or want to pay the extra $30 it adds on to our power bill.
I have a litter box per cat...and they think that is silly. They haven't seen how much waste 4 cats can produce.
We aren't having kids so our cats & fish are our "kids".

do your parents put diapers on cats or something?! yea, our parents (both sets) think we're stupid to love fish so much and think we should just get rid of them all. wisdom doesn't always come with age.

If the fish at your Chinese restaurant are anything like the fish at my Chinese restaurant, they do need a lake. Seriously, the ones at the local place are something like 10 pounds apiece, and there are four of them in a 200g tank.
BTW, I think the goldfish need at least a 100g tank, if not the pond for the koi.
I also still think they can get very pretty koi for the equivalent of $5-10 (American, not sure how that translates to Euros)

I just realized I don't buy really expensive fish...my boyfriend does.
$30 is the most I have spent.

Hey, I resemble that remark! lol, I hope to be starting a saltie in a few months and the fish I am looking at all start at round $20 up to around $40. Some I've looked at, but, won't be getting any time soon, are around three to four hundred dollars. I was suggested an eel at fourteen hundred dollars, luckily I don't like eels lol.

Also, I've been noticing the thread gear toward the ungrateful lack of understanding from the families toward such a simple idea. The idea of respecting our conscientious decisions.
In my case my family is already upset (to the point of almost not wanting to talk to me) and all I have done as of yet is subscribe to a free magazine! (Of course, although they now know I have acquired a big tank, they don't know how much it cost yet lol heheheheh ).
When I try to talk to them so excitedly about something I learned about fishies, they just try to ignore it and change the subject. Today they finally talked about watching a TV show on the reefs. However, it was only to tell me how cruel I will be to kill a fish from the ocean. I DON'T EVEN HAVE ONE YET AND ALREADY THEY ARE CALLING ME A MURDERER! UGH!
In the end, it is a hobby I need for my health's sake. At this point I couldn't care less what they feel about it.

Yes, I relate to that. Not everybody can abide to the idea that fish can suffer, and that they can have personalities. And that you can love them. So we're branded animal rights activitists everytime we talk about our fish a little excitedly. And if we happen to spend a lot of money on it, then we're downright cuckoo!

yea, we get that crap from our parents, they think we're completely stupid to love our fish and spend money on them -- and they have ZERO interest in hearing about the fish. Does anyone have a family that can open their minds a little and see how fish really are?

The most I'VE ever paid for a fish was around $7, however, my friend Sarah bought me a bamboo shrimp that she paid $12 for. But still... lol not a lot of money.
