Best Buy is selling them, too, if that's an easier place to get to!

I picked up a Dell laptop for Stacy at Best Buy Monday. First thing I did was wipe the bomb factory off (windows vista) and installed Ubuntu on it. I added the KDE interface to upgrade it to Kubuntu and I have to say - I'm surprised how much I love that OS - I want her laptop now . I knew it was good, but it's really so cool and it wasn't hard to setup even though I never used it before Monday. It's a close 2nd to Mac OS X for me and I REALLY recommend it for PCs.
A new version of Kubuntu is coming along soon (in alpha/beta testing now) and WOW.. it does stuff that I've not seen on any other OS.

Hi!
Ubuntu rocks! In my new PC - I'm goong to have a Ubuntu/Windows thing. If I want to play a computer game, Windows (Ubuntu takes literally no PC games!), but for FL etc., Ubuntu.

I've been a linux guy for years, and I couldn't agree more. It's free, it works, it's extremely stable, and it's free!
KDE is the most "windows" like desktop environment, but you should be able to bring up Gnome also... once you get used to it, it's very user friendly.

Well a little anyway. Apple recently released the Safari Browser for Windows. I'm using it right now and it feels really weird. The default font is very different than I'm used to but I like it. For someone who's been all PC for 2 decades the lingo is different and it has just a different feel. So far I love it though. Once I figured out how to customize it to my liking I found it to be quite nice. The Bookmark bar is great and it has auto spell\grammar check. I usually use the Opera Browser which is also a quality browser. I'll have to put some real time into Safari before I commit to it as the default browser. So far though it is making a better first impression than Opera. For a Mac user I'm sure it would feel normal. The default font is taking me back to High School. It was all Mac in the school library. Makes me think of typing up essays for class. Oh one more thing, pages load like lightning in Safari. A huge plus.

Almost every pc Ive ever worked on and/or had for personal use has had some form of windows...
so, for me, its just familiarity... that makes it better easier...

More people also go to McDonalds and order pizza than going out for a quality meal! I've been forced to use windows all my life and when I had the money to get a new computer, I bought a macbook and I am so happy I did! I can do anything I want safely with no viruses! The only thing that sucks is having to pay for upgrades, but they end up being worth it in the long run.
The best thing I can tell you, is to go to an apple store and they let you test-drive they're products. I garuntee it will be love at first site!

I'd go Mac if I could build one. I came into some parts for a PC so I'm building my own. You can't do that with a Mac. You have to buy an actual Mac. If i could install Mac OS on my new computer I would. I'd like to give it a shot but I already have a PC. I'd convert my Laptop too. Alas, I'm stuck with Vista.

You don't have to be stuck with Gates-ware if you have a PC. I got Stacy a laptop earlier this month and had Vista wiped off that thing as fast as I could. She's running with Kubuntu and although not as good as the Mac OS, it's a whole lot better than Vista, and you get the advantages of linux.
You can buy a bare-bones mac from apple, then upgrade it with parts from other sites. There's a number of online stores selling mac parts and you can end up getting a mac for cheaper that way.

The Ubuntu laptop was the only machine that was not hacked during a security conference last week. The Mac went down fairly easily, and Vista was next due to a flash issue.
The linux box was unbroken after 3 days... got to love linux!!!!
