very cool.. where did you find him? we almost got a nearly full-sized L333 at a fish auction, but the bidding went to high for us.

I went to buy tubifex/bloodworms at my lfs and as usual just walked around checking what they in store. I got a shock when i saw this small little thing sitting under a piece of wood. The guy insisted it was a 'zebra pleco' but i knew it definitely wasnt. Took it anyway as it was too good a chance to miss!

Yes, I have one. He's sort of like a brother in law, hangs around, not doing anything other than eating my driftwood and looking ugly. But I've had the old boy several years now, and I don't feel like getting the courts involved to evict him.

isn't it nice to have their ignorance work in your favor for a change?

got my 3 bns! 1 girl, 2 boys. the 2 boys live in the 45gal and the female in the 28 gal. may breed them one day when i have more time and space! at the moment they seem very happy where they are. they are peaceful and keep my tanks immaculate! the tanks are both in south facing rooms and have the tank lights on for 14hours or so a day so should be full of algae.....but the plecos see to that! they are permanently looking for food so get topped up with algae wafers and cucumber as i worry, cos there's just no algae for them!

congrats on your BN plecos! what light spectrum do your tubes have on your tanks? you may be able to increase algae production with light peaking in blue or yellow.

I don't have one. They get way to big for what I have room for. I honestly don't know that much about them.

Not if you get bristlenoses (ancistrus). They grow only to about 5" and eat a lot of algae.

Personally, I don't see what people think is so great about em.
1. They aren't very hardy.
2. They never do anything.
3. Not the best coloration.
4. They get huge.
5. The bigger they get the uglier they are.

I would have to disagree

1) Mr. Jones is my sole survivor of the "Empty fish food bottle" incident of 2005 He approaching 7 years old, and has survived power outages, ich outbreaks, a dropped cup of coffee into the tank, a any possible freshwater tank emergancy you can think of.
2) Sure they do. They uproot your plants, knock the decorations over, and hog the fish food.
3) Depends on your point of view. I think a silver or red peco would look odd.
4) That's part of why I like them.
5) The same could be said about me. I was a cute kid. But I'm neither cute or a kid anymore. But they keep me around anyhow.

1. Seriously... They are super-tough fish. Very hardy critters - look at what Magpie's has lived through!
2. *Ahem* They eat algae, suck on the side, and only hide if they don't have enough boltholes! My BN is very active.
3. Seriously... Do you think a flourecant pink pleco would be cool? Have you seen the Fancy Plecos - like Zebra or Queen Arabesque? Amazing! And just look at a Flash pleco...
4. Like - yeah right. There are tons of Dwarf plecos on the market - and the BN is one of the best.
5. Acctualy I can't wait to see if my BN will grow branched tentacles, ordinary one or if s/he's female!
