Master Of Fish Poo!

congrats on your BN plecos! what light spectrum do your tubes have on your tanks? you may be able to increase algae production with light peaking in blue or yellow.

I don't have one. They get way to big for what I have room for. I honestly don't know that much about them.

Not if you get bristlenoses (ancistrus). They grow only to about 5" and eat a lot of algae.

Personally, I don't see what people think is so great about em.
1. They aren't very hardy.
2. They never do anything.
3. Not the best coloration.
4. They get huge.
5. The bigger they get the uglier they are.

I would have to disagree

1) Mr. Jones is my sole survivor of the "Empty fish food bottle" incident of 2005 He approaching 7 years old, and has survived power outages, ICH outbreaks, a dropped cup of coffee into the tank, a any possible freshwater tank emergancy you can think of.
2) Sure they do. They uproot your plants, knock the decorations over, and hog the fish food.
3) Depends on your point of view. I think a silver or red peco would look odd.
4) That's part of why I like them.
5) The same could be said about me. I was a cute kid. But I'm neither cute or a kid anymore. But they keep me around anyhow.

1. Seriously... They are super-tough fish. Very hardy critters - look at what Magpie's has lived through!
2. *Ahem* They eat algae, suck on the side, and only hide if they don't have enough boltholes! My BN is very active.
3. Seriously... Do you think a flourecant pink pleco would be cool? Have you seen the Fancy Plecos - like Zebra or Queen Arabesque? Amazing! And just look at a Flash pleco...
4. Like - yeah right. There are tons of Dwarf plecos on the market - and the BN is one of the best.
5. Acctualy I can't wait to see if my BN will grow branched tentacles, ordinary one or if s/he's female!

Yes, I have an albino bristlenose. He's very helpful in cleaning my tank of algae. But when I drop a vegetable in the water he will attach to it and if other fish want to have a bite the pleco will shoo them away saying, "this is mine"

Overall I think the pleco is a nice fish to have but I quite don't like the common pleco because of its size.

I have two L107 BN plecos. They are awesome and keep my tank sparkling clean. They are almost my favorite fish.

I had one for a little while but it produced so much waste and ate my plants (grr!!!!) that I got rid of him. Also, I find them frightening..

hello fellow fishers, new guy on the block here.I like plecos.I think they are great tank inhabitants that add action to the tank.I just purchased a 3 inch gold nugget pleco and gave away my common one.Sort of bad mistake as,since the week i've had Goldy,I have seen maybe three times.(sigh) Pretty pleco but nowhere around to show to people.

Yeah thats the hold back about fancy pleco's. Still, i never give up the hope that they will learn to come out as they get used to their surroundings.

I have a dwarf pleco and it never comes out in the day and never sucks on the glass, i mean isnt sucking on the glass one of the main things plecos do.

I have a clown pleco - he doesn't do much in keeping the tank clean & I don't see him very often. But on the plus side - you can pet him.
I think every tank, if it's big enough, should have a pleco.

Newbie here... A sales clerk told me that plecos do not actually eat the algae in the tank, they need driftwood to eat. Is that true?

Thats partially true. Plecos eat very little algae especially when they get larger. I know vampire plecos and bristlnose plecos tend to eat more algae than others as they get larger. Still, they are omnivores and need more to stay healthy. Some types do require driftwood. At the very least, they all tend to like it for hiding places. For others, it is required in their diet. It really depends on the species you are talking about. There are so many different ones.

I have three plecos.
they are all worth scraping fish poo out of the tank for.
My tanks are sparkilng clean
I have a sailfin, a marble sailfin, and a tiny pleco. My two larger ones are snuggled up together at the moment.
I don't know what I would do without a pleco in my tank.
