My new BN Pleco that we picked up today. It is about 5 inches long and pretty big.
|
Is that Species 3? Did you get him at a petstore? I"m surprised he's so big, since most petstores sell them as babies and don't usually have them long enough for them to get big.
They should certainly do a very good job on your algae!

Hi Barbrella
I dont know what Species 3 is? I bought them at a fish store that was not a chain store petstore and this place has a lot of large mature fish there. I measured the larger one and he is just about 5 inches from head to end of tail. the other one is smaller around 3.5 or so.
Here are two photos that may help you to help me identify this BN? and can you let me know what the species 3 is? thanks!

Wow, he has a lot of bristles! 5" is fully grown, but his bristles will get longer as he matures.
Sp.3 is the most common of the ancistrus. Yours does look like that, but there's so many different species - many unnamed as yet - it's hard to be sure. But if I had to guess, I"d say sp. 3.
Very very nice!!!

Mine looks exactly like this, incl the lack of bristles!
I also think yours is a variety of Ansistrus sp3. Maybe this..

Any suggestions on a pleco for my Rio300 once it's set up and running.
I was either thinking of a pair of BN's or maybe try a pair of zebra's and breed either of the pairs.
Not both species in at the same time.
Or should I just go for something else?

I just found out my plecos like green peppers, but I must try some watermelon!
Lots of great pics! Goggles, that was indeed a lovely fish.
In the meantime:

When I put melon of any kind in the tank I just put the rind with just a smidgen of the melon that way the sweet juice doesn't mess up my tank and only leave it for about an hour or so.

Here are two juvenile albino bristlenose. Though they're still pretty small (approx 2.5"), I'm guessing that the first picture is a male, and the second is a female.
