petting my fish

Ive seen pics where people have been hand feeding their fish so I thought I would give it a try. Ive started out with petting the one bristlenose, you might remember her as the one that likes to bury things and eat through chunks of cucumber from underneath ( ive posted a vid and pics of her doing this)
Anyway I thought the best way to start was to get her used to my hand so thats what ive been doing. Ive now got her to where i can stroke her sides and back and she just stays there. Hopefully i will be able to get her to eat food from my hand soon

hello!
You can do hand feedings, but i wouldnt pet them. I think it messes up their slime coat..

EDIT, i wrote live feedings instead of hand feedings ... duh! lol

I think it would be ok if you don't pet the fish too hard. Just make sure you have good water and maybe add some prime now or then.

hmmm instead of prime i would make it stress coat so the slime can regenerate. i guess it coud be aright, just make sure you wash your hands really well, before putting your hand in the tank.

I pet my goldies all the time. As long as you don't rub too hard, it shouldn't bother them. I'll hang my hand in the water and the goldies will come up and push their way through my fingers.

Your pleco is beautiful. Looking forward to seeing pics of the handfeeding!

Just don't wash them with soap, it wouldn't be too good if residue got into the tank. Good call with the prime and stress coat, stayed up all night at a church lockin so I have a reason to be making mistakes

good point on the soap, just rinse your hands really well. Who know what we could introduce into our tanks if we didnt wash our hands!!!!

lol I always wash my hands withought soap if im going to put them in the tank and that was just after a water change in which i used prime. I also only did it very softly as i didnt want to harm the fish. she must also like it as she didnt move away from me......

Good morning. I think we are all tempted to pet our fish at one time or another. It's not something I recommend doing, but I think once in a while isn't going to do much harm. I wouldn't pet it like I do a dog but, gently once or twice with a finger. As mentioned you have to take into consideration their slime coat and not to remove it.
Take care!
