My pleco died during the night. I didn't even have him for that long, maybe two or three months at the most. I did a wc and gravel vac the other night, and all was well. Yesterday I noticed he started turning white then he would
turn back to gray, and last night he went into the cave and tried to squeeze through a little opening (too small for him) and got stuck, so I got him out of the cave and he moved over to the corner. This morning I found him, and he was dead. His underside was just as black as black could be, his tummy looked bruised. So I'm not sure what exactly happened... I know my kids miss him. They loved watching him stick to the glass and eat the algae.

Sorry about the loss... Could it be that you had a gas bubble under the gravel and when you did the vac it released it?

if his belly was all bruised could it be the gravel hurt him when he got stuck? I know my BN love to dig about and I used to worry that the gravel would hurt them which is why I moved them to my big tank that used sand instead
