Yes, tank size does inhibit their growth, more commonly known as "stunting". If kept in an undersized tank, a fish with the potential to attain about 2 feet long will only remain as much as its surroundings allow it. However, only the outer part of the fish stops growing, the internal organs continue to grow, making this a painful experience for the fish. If your brother has a common pleco or a sailfin pleco, and has had it for several years, chances are, its had its growth stunted. Plecos can grow very quickly. I had a common pleco and purchased him at around 3 inches long. No later than 3 months go by and he's grown to about 6 or 7 inches long. I eventually had to rehome him. |
