what about a bristle nose in a 20 gallon? and still stocked normally with other fish...would that work out?

Yeah, I have a BN Pleco in one of my 20gals and he does fine.

BN Pleco are wonderful fish and YES they would do fine in a 20 Gallon

That will work. I'd find a good piece of mopani wood and a veggie clip (for cucumber or zucchini slices) to put in.
