Can anybody identify Pleco variety from a pic?

Hi,

The 1st fish we put in our tank were a Cory (Dora) and a pleco (Boots.)

Boots was sold to us as a dwarf variety but has grown far larger and far faster than any other catfish or pleco we have put in the tank I am sort of hoping that somebody here may be able to give me a L no for him so i can research him properly. We are kind of attached to him but we are also aware a standard pleco is not going to be able to stay for long even in our 60 gal tank.

I hope the picture are clear enough for the 'experts' here to give us an idea of his variety and an indication of his possible max size.

Thanks for your help

Wow that was fast!

Thanks, I guess I was hoping you were not going to say that though 1 18 - 20 inch fish in a tank thats only 5'6" long is not going to be very happy for very long!

How many gallons is the 5'6" tank? Sounds nice.

If it's a 60gal tank then a Pleco should be fine with a good filtration system and regular water changes

The reason I asked this question is that my 75g is 4 ft long so if yours is 5ft maybe it's bigger than 60g but never heard of a tank only being 6 inches wide. am I reading your post wrong?
For him to be comfortable at adult hood the tank needs to be wide enough to turn around easily.

Boots looks a bit like my two sailfin plecos. I got them at WalMart and was told they would not get over 8 inches in length and would be good for a 20 gallon tank. I was buying them for my pond (150+ gallons) so I didn't worry too much about what their adult size would be. Most pet store employees just don't know what they are talking about...

Looks like you have the same problem I do have two tanks a 50 and a 55 and I have one Sailfin Pleco on each and one of them is 10" and the other is 11". So I'm selling them. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advise folks.

As for the tank it 5'6" on its longest side and its 230ltrs so aprox 60 Gal (bowfront), I know its only 230 cause I counted them in when I filled it originally, so with all the other fish in it I think he will overload it when he grows up to full size, well probably half size. But who knows by that time we may have upgraded to a 350 ltr. MTS has set in at an early stage!

Thats our main tank but we have a 30ltr with 10 Serpes that just will not play nice in the big tank so they have their own home. Lovely looking fish and fun to watch but despite what the LFS said they are not suitable for community tanks.

A 5 Gal with a betta (Simon the Siamese) we're trying to find a suitable tankmate for him a cory perhaps?

And a 25ltr breeder tank with 10 newly birthed Guppys and looking at the other Guppys, Mollys and Platys in the main tank they will have more company soon!

Weekends are a fun time for hours of testing and water changing.

Fortunately, mine aren't a problem as they have plenty of room in my pond. They are in an overfiltered, carefully monitored, heated, 40 gallon breeder tank for the winter, then back out into the pond as soon as it warms up to at least 70 degrees. I bring in mossy rocks for them and they clean them off every night. They just won't come out if there is any light at all, so I don't get to see them too often - even in the house.

There really aren't any suitable tank mates for bettas, corys would be pushing it, plus they need to be in schools.
