which pleco?

Hi there,

Have a little bit of an algae problem, nothing to really worry about but I'm looking to get a pleco to hopefully keep it under control! I have a 50 gallon tank with mollies, platys, clown loaches and tiger barbs. Any tips on which pleco to go for?

Thanks

Welcome to Fishlore!

I would not suggest adding any fish to that tank.
The guideline of what you can keep in a tank is 1" of adult fish per gallon of water. You've got 3 clown loaches (36"), 2 mollies (6"), 2 platies (6"), and 6 tiger barbs (18"). That's 66" of fish. While this probably only moderately overstocked, adding a pleco (which is a heavy waste producer) would push it into a dangerous situation.

Sorry I can't give you better news.
Looks like you've got a neat selection of fish, and we would love to see pictures if you've got a digital camera.

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

With the stocking you currently have, you really can't add more fish, as sir suggested, but there are a few things to do about the algae......

First....do you test your water? What is your water changing schedule? A 25-50% water change any time your nitrates get up over 10 will significantly decrease the "food" for algae...With a heavely stocked tank this might mean every other day, but it will actually keep your whole tank healthier also.

Second....cutting light.....How many hours a day is your tank lit?

If it is located where it gets direct sun, can be a problem. With lights if you turn them off after 10 hours a day, it helps keep algae at bay...

One other thing, decrease the ammount you feed....IF there is any left-overs....just feed your fish enough that they totally clean it up within 2-3 minutes...

You could try adding shrimp, they don't add much bio load, and are a help picking up little specks of food.....and eating algae.....problem is depending on the fish, they may end up as food themselves....I successfully keep cherry red shrimp with platies and mollys, but I don't think they would survive in with loaches and tiger barbs.....
