Alge wafer question/problem...

Okay.. I have 2 plecos in a tank w/ my african cichlids.. How do I get the plecos to get to the alge wafers on time to eat to keep the cichlids from munching on them? I have a Kenyi Cichlid that loves them.... hes a PIG!! and I have no alge in the tank that I know of right now..

Try dropping the wafers in for the Plecos at night, after the lights are out. Most Plecos I've seen are active after dark and will find the wafers with no issue.

You can also try feeding a good chunk of zucchini weighted down by a fork so it will sink. Plecos need variety also, and since your piece of zucchini will be much larger than the wafers, your pleco will probably get a good chance at some of it.

That is such a good idea. I have been having the same problem, but my catfish are slowly learning to assert themselves and make sure that they get food.

I think your pleco will love the fresh veggies, and you can even take some meaty food sticks like earthworm or plankton and push them into the soft side of the zucchini to give your pleco a little protein boost. I would definately drop it in at night though when doing this, so your pleco will have more of a chance at it, and because the extra protein might not be something you want the africans to eat a lot of. They will probably be interested in the zucchini as well.
