hi

my platys in my 180l tank seem happy enough at first and water quality is perfect. i have noticed with a few of my platys their tails have gone very thin at the end and have started swimming weird. after a week or two they die 1 by 1. have lost about 4 now
does any1 know what this is

When you say thin, do you mean skinny or thin as in disintegrating? If the tail seems to be disappearing it may be some sort of fin rot....

well it is like thin it is not like its normal fan shape it goes to a point

Then it sounds like what you have are male swordtails and not platys. Do they look something like this.....?

Can you post a picture? It's hard to guess without seeing them.

yea, it could be a tail rot case which would need anti-fungal meds. if you can post a pic, we'll be able to be more certain.

Also what are the ammonia, nitrAte, and NitrIte levels of your tank?

Also how long has the tank been set up? Is it cycled?

Ammonia,nitrate and nitrite are all fine so is the ph

I have taken a pic it may take a while to load

i would say the tail has gone rectangle in stead of the fan like tail it use to have



The tail goes like that and with in about 2 weeks it dies ?

Its only with the platys the other fish are fine

It looks like it could be clamped fin.. any other members think it's clamped fin? Can you get some Fungus Clear tablets at the store?

decided to do a Google i think it maybe tail rot ?

tail rot is another possibility. fortunately, the same medicine (fungus clear) treats fin rot and clamped fin. if you can find that at the store, it is easy to use, but will turn your water blue and dye decorations in the tank blue so take them out before using the fungus clear. and the carbon will have to come out of your filter, but that's it.

i have the same problem too.
i took home these 4 platys...2 were medium sized, bright orange and yellow colour.
the first one started to get pointed fins...like you described....unfortunately i got rid of it.

the second one had a perfect tail...then a few days later..same thing...its fins started turning that shape...
then tonight when i got home...it just gave up on me and moved on to a better place. weiiiirddddddd........im thinking its the exact same problem you're having.
maybe it's some kind of plague!!!!*
