Yippy!

Exactly 1 month ago we discovered small platy fry. We only managed to save 5 which was more than enough for us. They have been in a floating breeder in our 30 gallon tank.

I just released 1 into the big tank. Talk about scary!! LOL I kept holding my breath everytime another fish came near him/her. We werent really sure if she/he was big enough to go in the tank yet. But seems to be doing great! Had to laugh as he/she attempted to learn to swim in the big tank, doesnt seem skiddish or anything, the big fish come right up to him/her and she just swims around them.

Have 4 more left, 1 is probably ready to go in the big tank to but gonna try to hold off a few more days. And see how the one we put in today does.

We had zebra danios that gave us babies every 2 weeks but they were so small and took forever to grow, that we actually sold them before they got anywhere near this size. (we would hve hundreds at a time)

So all in all this if our first official baby raising/releasing

I will try to get pics and post soon. Thanks to everyone who got us this far

Good Luck with your fry. I never removed mine from the tank and they made out just fine. I found myself watching and watching and there were some tense moments for sure but none of my other fish paid much attention to them.

Yes, its VERY scary i caught myself holding my breath a few times lol

redlessi---I thought about doing that until i literally saw the other fish eating some of the fry (hence why we only got 5) then when i realized the mother was actually giving birth right then i put her in the breeder and saw her drop 1 and eat it right away. So the idea of leaving them in the tank went out the window.

Im worried about the baby in the big tank getting food. Normally we feed the babies every few hours. But i only feed my big fish once a day.......Will he/she be ok with just once a day at 1 month old? I didnt really think about it :| And i hope he will come up to the top to get his food

I released my molly fry (about a half-inch long, but stocky) after 4 weeks into the big tank. At that point, they are small enough to occasionally be chased, but too big to be eaten.

Now that they're in the big tank, it's been about 3 weeks and they're going strong. I don't feed them separately (it would be impossible); they find enough stuff on their own. I always see them picking at the decor, the glass beads, the sand, the driftwood, etc. I have no algae, so I have no idea what they're eating, but they are growing. Sometimes I see them nip at a piece of fish flake that floats past the feeding frenzy of adults, but that's all.

OH. I do have the intake filter stuffed with filter fiber. Otherwise, they can get sucked to it and die.

Hello Heather and congrats on the fry and the new release. I think the one that you've released will find the food he needs when you feed the others once a day.
Best wishes!
