gravid spot

Hi all, just wondering if female platies have a gravid spot like guppies? If not how can you tell if they are pregnant?

Thanks much

It depends on what color you platy is.

My platys get very big, don't eat and their stomachs will square off some. They will also stay in one corner or hide near plants. You can tell after one or 2 birthings when to place them in a breeder box

Oh I love those types, I used to have 4 but my one male stressed out one female than moved on to another female and so on so it was only him, ok back to subject, you should be able to see their gravid spot if you take a very bright light from above and her body will become unrefiective so you can see into her back area and you should see babys

I have 2 females and 1 male. He is a lot smaller than they are and does not pay too much attention to the girls yet. They all look healthy (plump). They were in the same tank at petsmart so I was just wondering if the girls were already pregnant when I got them. They are really cute with a lot of personality.

I have a sunset wag tail platy i think its called.......shes like orange and whiteish with odd black markings......looks like she got ran over (tire tracks) lol shes all orange underneath and she dropped fry about 2 weeks ago....She never got a gravid spot, never acted funny (hidding etc) and never even got fat!! I watch my fish like crazy and i never even thought she was pregnant. I actually wouldnt have even found the babies but i had a sudden feeling to check and see how the gravel looked (missed a vac/water change) and I saw these little orange guys!!

Anyways........I guess sometimes they dont show any symptoms.....Its the only platy i have so either my male molly who lovessssssssss her managed to get her knocked up (they say its impossible but who knows lol) or she was preg. when we bought her

I hope you get babies! They are soooooo cute!! All we ever had was zebra danio fry and lemme tell you they arent cute lol

hi With the lighter color Platys, orange sunburst, yellow twin bars, you can see a definite gravid spot. On the darker orange and Blue wags its hard to see.
The Platys can have 40-50- even 60 fry at a time if not more. Just usually you don't find all of them because some are usually eaten by the adult. As they age they peak with the highest amount of fry births, and it gets lesser as they get older. They can have fry at 4 months of age and as early as 3 months, if the conditions are right. I have fry that are only 3 months old and a few may be caring. (I hope not).
Be sure to plan ahead for the homes or local fish store to bring your fry in. They will take over your tank before you know it. < check my picts > good luck

I dont know how many mine has because like I said she never got a spot, never acted funny, and never even got fat. So i didnt realize she was pregnant. Decided to take a look at the gravel (missed a cleaning) and saw little orange babies.

Luckily some of them were down in the gravel, between the gravel and the sides of the tank so we were able to catch them with a turkey baster (carefully) A few were hidding under the plants (the plastic base was pulled up from our pleco and they were under it) and a few were trying to swim and were a nice snack for the big fish

I didnt know who was pregnant but then i noticed my platys vent was open and i figured it out. I hurried and put her in a breeder, watched her drop 2 fry and turn around and eat them lol so that didnt work well. Put her back in the big tank and took a chance (no one was bothering her)

In the end we only have 5 babies ...........but thats enough for me

Hi Mare2009, I saw you public service announcement and it was enlightening to say the least

Heather, when my guppy had fry, I too was unaware she was ready to drop and found them by accident. I tried to remove them from the tank but could not catch them. 5 made it and they are the cutest!!

I was joking anyways. I actually found humor in it too, after watching it later. But it has a non-offending messege, and thats what I really wanted. good luck with you fry
